Shell now sprayed

Well here it is, managed to get out there and spray the shell over the weekend, needs a good mopping over to get it flat and shiny but I'm happy with it, not 100% perfect but never mind!

This shows the quality from the gun

Verdict's and views? :D

Phil,

Looking good so far - gonna take a bit of cutting back tho' I rekon.  How many coats did you put on?

What are you going to use to cut it?  I've heard good things about G3 etc

Cheers

Thats brave work Phil liking the guts. 8)  Looking good so far! :D

Thing is when you're doing a home job you never know what its going to look like until the paint is on. The result is in the prep work.  If youre still not happy give it another light rub down with the fine stuff and blow it again. The more you put on the more you can cut back for that deep shine. Buff it by hand takes more time but you get the results.

I've heard good things about G3 too.

Mines having the same treatment in July so I'm in the same boat as you Phil. We can do it!

Come on the Black Golfs :cheer:

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

Cheers Rich.

I put on 4 coats which I think should be enough.

wasn't sure what cutting compound to use to take it back, was going to go to Reading paints and see what they recommend.

I was thinking of using a 1200 grit sandpaper with fairy liquid very lightly to take the top roughness off, good idea?

1200's still harsh. Use old stuff with plenty of water and suds but go easy!

G3 all the way!!

invest in a good polisher too saves alot of work, although dont buy an electric one like I did get an air one or your arms will be dropping off you by the end of it

I used Wet'n'dry with soapy water to take the orange peel off first, then cut it by hand using cutting compuund (G3 etc etc), and then  final buff and polish on my own car. Only way I was gonna get the  smooth glass like finish iI wanted. Took ages (about  10 days), but looked stunning afterwards.

Just meant I had no skin left onthe fingers afterwards, as did it all by hand !!

Ah Cool.. Cheers

Need to pop down there for more paint so might as well go down there sooner rather than later.

I'll let you know how it goes as I'll be rubbing it down by hand   hours of fun

Be interesting to see what it turns out like after cutting…

I wanted to do my own paint but didn't think I'd get the finish!?!? :dontknow:

Did you do it on the driveway or inside the garage?

Post

well.. tried spraying it in the garage but kept hitting my back on the door hinges, so ended up spraying it outside!!

got 1 fly on it while drying but managed to get the little bugger off without making a mess!

I'll post some pics next week of how it turns out after cutting!

I'm not completely happy with where I've done some repairs (some very small area's arn't completely flat!), but it's good enough for me for now anyways

Sorry Kins I missed this post! (I'm so unobservant today I'm a hazzard to myself!)…  definately agree with not knowing how it's going to look until the top coat is on! when the primer went on it looked pretty much exactly how I wanted it… top coat goes on and BOO! ripple hear, swirl mark there!.. once I've got a shine (4 coats is enough don't you think??) I'll leave it at that, once it's on the road I'll just respray a panel if and when I want it looking better!

 Agree though! Come on Black mk1's

That paint job looks not too bad at all, especially given you had to do it outside.

Just out of interest what sort of gun and compressor did you use? I have a small 1.5hp compressor and one of the budget Clarke guns that came with it and just curious to know if its possible to get a decent finish with this setup or whether I would be wasting my time…..

I've also read a lot about a specific type of dual action polisher that a lot of different people seem to rave about - a US made Porter Cable 7424 dual action random orbital polisher. Not cheap, but supposed to be the dogs as far as finishing goes. Was just thinking it might be worth the investment if you had a whole car to do……
