New mk1 golf project

Hey everyone I have just brought a mk1, It has always been my dream car. Its in ok condition, nice and original, it comes with an mot and has had a paint job a few years ago,

Today is the first day playing with this lovely motor, i was really suprised by the results when i started to peel back the interior and exterior trim, below is the mk1, next to my mk2 16v gti which is now up for sale.

First of all I stripped the interior and sorted out the maze of wiring, removed mostly dodgy looking speaker wire and an alarm

Then I got the angle grinder and cut away any rust I could see from the inside. which was a tad more than I expected

Then I attacked the rear arches.

hmm seems like I have quite a project ahead of me.

good effort, when do you think you'll get her finished for?

Excellent work so far.  Certainly inspired me with my project.  My mk1 needs almost exactly the same areas welded.  Can I ask how much you paid for the respray?

The respray was done by myself, I payed approximately £300 for materials including a good quality 2k paint, I was suprised how easy it was to paint, however, a vast amount of hours went into the prep. overall its quite a good job with only a few small dust marks in the paint, I hope to finish mid next summer, its just rather annoying being at university and urging to get back home to do more work on it.

That's some very good work.  I'm hoping to spray my mk1 too.  I think £300 is a fair price for a spray job!

Progress is pretty slow at the moment,  however I've had the weekend with the mk1, and my new zinc plating kit, i'm very impressed with the results :)

what an awesome piece of kit it's saved so much money,

Took a while to achieve the results, I just cant wait to bolt the shiny bits to the car

So I sort of forgot about this thread. The car isnt another half finished project and has been on the road for the  last 12 months.

I completely underestimated the original timescale / budget for the project but am  now happy with the results.

So now the car was back on the road and looking rather nice , I fancied doing some more changes.

Firstly I mangaged to aquire a full leather interior in great condition, this really does improve the inside of the car

After driving the golf around for a while I was starting to get annoyed with the road noise. So I stripped out the interior and fitted silent coat panels, followed by dodo mat noise reduction foam and finally dodo mass loaded vinyl. Additionally i placed a thin piece of ply in the boot to reinforce the carpet.

Cardboard template.

Silent coat panels being measured up.

Inside lined, next was dodo foam and mass loaded vinyl. (no pics)

So i currently have just come back from deployment and have almost a month off work :)

Whilst away I managed to get a great deal on this, doesnt look much but its a TSR donnington engine with 40,000 miles. It has larger valves uprated cam, and rebored to 1.9 litre with balanced crank and lightened flywheel.

So over the past few days I have stripped the engine down to a bare block and repainted using POR15.

So as it stands Im now putting the block back together and refurbing buts as I go along. Heres a pic of a bit of painting and some vauxhall 256mm calipers Ive brought.

And im also back on the zinc plating.

I will try and keep regular updates of progress in the next few weeks.
