My Resto - THE epic saga

 time to revive the old resto thread.. as well as revive the need to get my Mk1 on the road

it's been about 6 months, sat down a dirty mud track on what can only be decribed as my dad's farm

I didn't have the heart to take any pics of it then as it looked terrible
anyway, the bug is back  :D and this time she's going to be finished

first step was to get her back somewhere where I could do the work and give her a damn good soaking

tucked away a few weeks ago

since then I've got the rear axle back off, just waiting on some cutting discs and investigating spraying water based paint for the DIY'er, this time I'm going to get it right

off to get cracking shortly, will have a couple of small updates later

feels good to be back  :D

no pics but lots of progress!  8)

finally getting somehwere with the axle mount that almost killed my motivation completely!

all rot is gone!! took best part of 3hrs to remove everything to a point where I can offer up the repairs, if I'm not hung over tomorrow I'll get stuck in a bit more, time to fire up the welder and get some new metal in

 :cheer:

after pretty much my entire weekend of cutting and welding…..

TADA  :D

there's more weld in there than the entire car I'm sure, plus so much seam sealer it's weighing the back end down

just need to spot weld the lower edge, paint it up and that'll be that.. still the longest I've ever taken to do a job, next up I need to send the rear axle for shot-blasting and powder coating then put it all back together

will be nice when I don't have to be under the rear of the car

been getting stuck in some more

spent a few minutes thinking about the best way to get the axle bushes out… then thought bugger it this will do

Magic

and after a sand down, paint, and new bushes

also finished the axle itself

just need to do a VW trip this week for some nuts n bolts, and awaiting new ARB bushes and a brake pipe flaring kit, then all being well I should have the back axle back on next weekend

I've been a busy boy!  :D

been out in the cold all weekend, put the thermal overalls to the test

really pleased with the progress, still lots and lots to do… but I'll let the (crappy camera phone) pics do the talking

first I got some new shoes fitted

got busy making brake pipes

fitted all this lot

fitted the axle back up, went on like a glove

then fitted these

testing the ride height with the wing

got one more brake pipe to sort out, bleed it all, finish off fitting the fuel system and exhaust, got this week off so hoping to have them done and fire it up for the first time in about 18 months

then onto sorting a few bits of the bodywork

thanks for looking

Looking really good mate ;)

Are those Wellsy's 14" wheels which you were going to test out ages ago???

Cheers guys

Rich, nope. they're the RH classics I've had about 2yrs waiting to go on

got busy again today, but no pics

fitted the exhaust back up, got the fuel system plumbed in (what a nightmare those rubber pipes to the tank are!)

figured I'd end the day on a high so got some petrol and fired her up

still runs sweet as a nut, but the water pump is leaking and STILL got that hot start issue (hoping a new non-return valve at the pump will have that sorted once and for all)

tomorrows jobs are to finish off the brakes and get them working

if it's dry tomorrow I'll get some better pics

Dang! Was hoping to wind Wellsy up about 14" wheels at the next meet :)

Glad to hear it still runs - sounds like it could be there next week? Or if not then Feb? Either way it'll be cool to see it on the road again ;)

Just the job - you'll give Steve and the Hof a run for their money if you leave it like that too

Looking forward to seeing it when it's done. I guess it must be a couple of years almost since I last saw it!
