My Resto - THE epic saga

nice one Rich  :y: will give them a call when I get paid

got next week off to get cracking, should have all the inner wings/wheel arches + front panel ready to prep and paint

one question though, anyone got any recommendations for stonechip? otherwise I'll pop into halfords and get a couple of Hammerite cans

Phil…i'm about to pull the rear beam off the valver as well, (she'll be back!),  so may well be up for getting the beam and the misc brackets etc done at same time…let me know your plans.

Nice work Phill, will be good to see you back in a Mk1.

I have used Dinitrol to good effect. Got it from Rustbuster along with some cavity wax and epoxy mastic for the underside of the chassis. Not got around to stripping the underside yet so can't comment on the epoxy mastic but the stone chip seems to do the business.

the epoxy mastic stuff is very good

if your stripping the inner arches i would do them with it and then stone chip over the top to retain the factory style finish…

it dries rock hard. very good stuff.

Blimey that epoxy mastic is pricey…is the coverage quoted for a 1L tin (approx 5m^2) about right?

 found a nasty hole in the drivers side axle mount area over the weekend that I hadn't noticed while removing the axle

should have it all welded up tomorrow weather permitting though, then I'll post a pic up of the mess that was

will have a box of parts ready to go to the powder coaters by the end of the month if Rajan/Dave is interested in bulking together?

Minor update

Stripped the fuel system off

To get a better look at the axle mount area (not that you can see much in the pic, forgot the flash)

compared to the passenger side

anyway, need to check exactly what 'should' be under the axle mount (another box section?) before I weld it up as I think the inner box section has gone

new panel time I think, if I want it doen right of course

got fed up looking at it so thought I'd finish of the passenger side

bit of stone chip and that'll be finished  8)

Doubt i'll have mine ready for end of the month…i'll see!  Have a welder coming to quote on mine, I don't have the time to do that and the stripping/rebuilding what with it being at my parents….

Aside from teh classic rear beam nut problem, is the rest of it easy enough to get off?  I doubt my fuel system will have moved in ….a long time!

yes, everything else was fine with the exception of the rear brake bias valve  :banghead: managed to round off one of the brake lines

Let me know how much the welder quotes for the work

mini update

I've had to delay working on the Mk1 as I'm changing my daily over this month

collecting some parts though  :D

received the girlfriends birthday present on tuesday   nice set of coilovers courtesy of Alec (VWTurbo.co.uk)

pics to follow this weekend

really wished this axle mount area was sound! it's a much bigger job than I had expected

8O WOW.. has it really been 3 months!   I'm ashamed of myself for leaving the Mk1 for so long!

Well, decided I'm going to push and try and get my Mk1 to this years annual show at Billing  8O but can't do this alone and may need to ask a few favours of help from you guys

run up a quick list of what 'needs' to be done to get it back on the road, not going to worry about the paintwork at the moment… well, if I end up with spare time, maybe give the roof a fresh coat

anyway, the list:

Recharge Battery
Sort out Gear Linkage                 – Required Linkage Kit (difficult 5th/Rev)
Refit Exhaust                 – New Exhaust rubbers
Fix Exhaust Heatshield              – Replacement available?
Replace Throttle body Idle Valve rubber
Aux. Belt Replacement
Fresh Oil + Filter
Rear Brake pipe kit (complete)
Replace Rear Brake Bias Valve
Fit Flexi hoses
New Fuel pump Check Valve
Hazzard switch
Front Licence plate Bracket        – (Need to source)
Replace Registration Plates
Repair Rear axle mount area
Refit Fuel system
Replace Rear Engine mount
Water Pump (leaks - new gasket?)
Fit coilovers
Fit new tyres
Fit wheels

On an EXTREMELY tight budget at the moment

Think I can get it done?  :dontknow:

The only issue I can see is the rear beam mount, and that's the first thing you'll need to tackle (obviously).

Should be do-able though provided that goes ok

:y: pretty much what I was thinking mate

'hopefully' I'll have it moved today, should have most of the parts thursday so given a free weekend I'll have it back on it's wheels and start work on the rest of the list

I'll be able to get stuck into it the weekend of GTI International  :banghead: which I may have to miss otherwise I might run out of time to get it on the road for the annual show

I can recharge the battery for you

Sounds like you're doing exactly what i've just done.  Rear mount repair panel etc.  What a f-ing ballache. I see why it's taken you some time, it's taken me ages to get my act together.  Wanted to make sure that all under the tank was sound before I put the tank back up.

First things first…  Get that Welding done, underside painted/undersealed etc.  Then we can come round and help reassemble.  Tbh i'm busy at weekends and on holiday most of july, but can come round during the week….nice long days at the moment!

Fuel pump check valve?  Sorry to sound ignorant, Whereabouts is that
