My mk1 Build *S1 dash now in, pg9*

So the time came for me to look for my first car for my 17th birthday. Finding Mk1's is hard enough without looking for a small rear light model in a particular colour(mars red), with 2 doors and with chrome bumpers. After looking at a few and then ending up not being able to get them for different reasons I started to realise that I wouldnt find the right Mk1 and gave up and started looking for a more common car. Then I found this..

Perfect except for the 1.8 that came with it..but atleast it wasnt in the car at the time. (originally a Golf N)

Then I started work with the help of my Dad and mechanic we know.
Sourced a 1.1 formel e engine and all the parts I needed for the Conversion.

Engine Mount and 1.8 that came with it:

The 1.8 mount was taken out and the 1.1 mount Welded in:

And then the engine went in

The 1.1 fuel tank was put in which was a big job as the axle needed dropped but we got there in the end.
Then we tackled the rust.

Other side needed the same parts welded

Then it was all waxoyled

The front part of the passenger side sill was welded and waxoyled.

Then I started the spraying of the engine bay, scuttle panel, wing, slam panel support etc

And then this is what the front end looked like

Started to look like a car once the wings and bonnet went on. The coilovers were also put on.

Got the interior in and added some custom carbon parts I made myself

And this is how the car stands now

Its going lower at the front when I have time to wind the coilovers down and it needs a good clean inside and out. All that needs done is the wiring of the horn and fog light and then it will be getting MOT'd..so fingers crossed!
In a way im glad the build is over because its caused a lot of stress with all the problems and I need to get some practice in it between driving lessons but I'll miss restoring it. Hopefully very soon mine will be another restored mk1 on the road :D

now that is spot on ross bet your well chuffed was it a gti to start with or just a big block carb lump?

Very chuffed :D . It was originally a golf N so it would have had a 1.1 in it. The previous owners planned on making it a track car and welded a 1.8 mount in it and it ended up being one of those 'unfinished projects' probably because of the amount of work needing done. So now I have a 1.8 lump and spares to sell.

yeah  really nice work on the car m8 1.1 for insurance purposees ?how long you had the car how long 2 do the work??

Post

Yeah, theres no way I could afford to insure it with the 1.8 that came with it. I got the car last April and its going for its MOT as soon as DVLA send the paper work back. I had to give proof of the engine conversion.
So I have been working on it since last April up to now because theres been a lot of hold ups uncluding the DVLA thinking it was scrapped at one point! Glad thats all sorted out now.

Should be on the road very soon. I need to get out in it to practice before my driving test.
I go to Knockhill and Crail raceway all the time. Cant wait for the touring cars at Knockhill!
