Areet dude, well i'm presuming (as mine is a 1.5 but a big block, as is yours, just bigger cc's!) that you have the same arrangement as me, the pick up in the sump IS the pump, it's a gear pump, driven from the dizzy/intermediate shaft. The smaller engines (i.e 1.1 and 1.3) have a crank driven pump, that is situated on the side of the engine.

I got mine fromt my local engine shop, they ordered it in for me, same pump but a different pick up (plastic, which i was a bit dubious of but i'm told that it is ok and it's just because of modern manufacuring methods……..cheaper to make out of plastic!) Also, i had to get longer bolts to mount it as the original pump body is a little bit shorter. The part that the oil filter screws to is simply a filter mount, but on the GTI's and bigger capacity engines it also forms part of the oil cooler i understand. Don't take my word for it tho, mine is just a filter mount.

It cost me bout ?60 inc. VAT for mine, you should be able to get hold of one no bother, GSF or somethin??

Nee bother dude, i was new to engine re-build side of things until i attempted this one (with the help of rustys_mk1). I have been messing on with cars since i was bout 12 or summit and have always found it interesting, but this has been a real learning curve for me, as i'm sure it is for you too!

It's looking good! Are there any other plans for the car or just the engine for now??

Going to redo the brake pipes, Goodridge braided flexi's and try to source a stainless steel exhaust to do while the engine is going in.  Makes sense to do it while there's room in the bay.

I did look at getting it bare metalled etc but at ?5,500+ the car is in too good nick to warrant it just yet.  Got new tailgate and bonnet ready though.. going to source other panels too… then get it done at some point.  Saving to buy another house to let out to someone just now ready for when house prices level out.

Look forward to seeing everyone at the AGM if they all go… hopefully car will be well done by then (even if I blow this engine)  :wink:

Engine rebuild looks like a top job mate. Great to see you making the most of the car.

I was looking through some old pics of when we put the Koni's on and remembered there are 2 different spring caps on the rear suspension. They often perish on older cars and we had to change one side for a MK2 front spring cap, we couldn't get hold of a correct one as it was a Sunday! Just thought I'd let you know as it may make a difference if both rear struts were perfectly balanced with genuine MK1 items.

Sorry to add another thing to your to do list.

Well I've been slacking a bit and it's now time to get back on this after a butt kicking from Brucieboy and jellybelly lol.  Moved house, making extra effort in work and trying to spend a bit of time with my niece and nephew as I've moved a fair bit away.

Enough the the sob story though.  I've painted a couple of bits and I'll be rubbing down and painting the intake manifold on Thursday ready for the weekend.

My new manifold has arrived from a seller on e-bay… a stainless steel number  :wink: .  Next payday is the rest of the system off of the bay again.

Updates to follow on Thursday and/or the weekend.  Trying to get half a day on Thursday so I can get it done and dried ready for fitting saturday.

Right then… the 16v pressure plate I bought is the wrong part so it put me back a bit.  I've just bought a standard 8v LUK clutch kit which seems to be the right one  :roll:

A lot of the parts are painted and on the engine now.  The only two things I'm leaving are the gearbox and the inlet manifold.  The painting has been the most time consuming part ever!!

This weekend I plan to de-grease the gearbox, fit the clutch and just review everything.

After that I need new hoses and the rest of the exhaust (got the manifold sitting there).  Hopefully getting somewhere… nervous about turning the key in a few weeks though  8O

It's Halfords high temp enamel as I couldn't get por… it was always out of stock… tried for weeks  :cry: … stuff I got isn't very hard wearing either but hey ho first shot and at least it's clean.

I'll get some pics this weekend when I get the clutch on  :wink: .  Thanks jellybelly  :D

Been a while since I updated.  I have now painted most things and reasembled the engine.  

I'll be painting the gearbox and inlet manifold at a later stage (want my car done for the AGM first)… maybe a winter job this year :dontknow:

It's basically the same process in reverse.  Renew the gaskets and seals and renew.  It's all in now as you can see:-



I'll be redoing the rocker cover and touching bits up as they were damage on the install  :roll: … first time doing this and all that lol…

I've bought a stainless steel manifold but it is hitting the inlet manifold and not fitting properly.  I may need to shape the brach fittings to get the inlet menifold on  8O !!  That's my next job!!



The rest of the exhaust system is also waiting to go on.



I had to cut the old exhaust to get it off as it had welded it's sections together!!

Got it from a company called TuningLeader on e-bay.  They had it as "Best Offer"… I put ?150 and they accepted so plus ?20 postage it was ?170.  BUT as I say, it's not fitting right but they are however trying to resolve it for me  :dontknow: … we'll see how it turns out.

Still watching your thread bud but aint had time to comment…. bloody neighbours aye… all that hard work and they cant see it  :roll: … keep hanging in there mate.

IM – SOOOO – CHUFFED!!!

The manifold was such a perfect fit that it was a little hard to get on.  I've yet to put the centre pipe and back box on so I'll hold judgement.

What I would say though is the manifold looks brilliant, good finish, speedy delivery and customer service second to none (important to me).  They asked me to send it back if I couldn't fit it and they'd send me another one!!..

The trick is to get the manifold on the studs and the nuts just on the ends… fit the inlet manifold… then button up the exahust… it worked a treat!!!  Possible benefit to the club because my experience with them has been good!!

I'll let you know the final fit.

The weekend will hopefully see the rest of the exhaust on and maybe the electrics and clips back on (need wire as some clips broke  :cry: )
