It has been a long time since i've done an update on this forum.  I've been very busy working, using my Golf daily to commute and get around in nasty, bus infested South london traffic.  So, haven't had much time to do any resto on it.

I've now owned the car for over a year and about 6k miles and have been slowly tidying up a few aspects of it, obviously the big job was some new metal and paint shortly after i bought it.  Then i had to fix a leak and bail out some water.  Aside from that, i always endeavor to keep it clean and waxed and carry out some very basic checks.  Oil, fixing the odd bulb, etc.

The only time it has caused me trouble and the AA's assistance was necessary, was when the clutch cable went through the bulkhead.  This was soon fixed with a repair panel.  More recently and annoyingly, an 'Ameoba' reversed (without looking) into my drivers door and caused a big dent, but this will soon be repaired.

I know, I'm now tempting fate here but, my mk1 is the most reliable and exciting drives i've ever had.  Nearly new cars have given me loads more grief.  It is a joy to own, pretty inexpensive and totally dependable as a daily car.  Not to mention that it always attracts so much interest and appreciation too.

Waffle and gushing over my hunk of metal finished….

In preparation for winter i went to get the underside and engine steam cleaned and then re-undersealed on an industrial level.

cue.

I couldn't afford the flashy classic car cleaning, waxoyl, U.V, 300 quid car pampering i would have liked to have given it, nor could i be bothered to spend hours underneath getting dirty.  But if it's good enough for TFL buses and cabs (which do thousands of miles) then it's good enough for me.

For once in harmony, Showering with a bus.

A couple of hours later a steam clean, a pressure wash, new underseal.  It went from this…

and this.

to…

and (slightly cleaner engine, you can now see the rust that was under the dirt).

Picks are a bit blurry as i couldn't really get a good one under the car.  But it is very well sealed with new shiney goo.  It'll last a good few years and if i ever need to do any work on the bottom they'll steam it back off  without re-sealing.

Quite a bargain i think at ?65.

Thank you Chris.  At least it should keep salt and dirt away from the metal.  Much to my surprise, the car started first time and there wasn't even a drop of water in the distributer cap.

Yes indeed 1977gti.  You over that way? I'm near Peckham Rye Park but often go over that way to my mates or brother in Forest Hill.  God I haven't updated this thread in an age.  Car is going great, new braided fuel lines last year, re-painted the boot and some of the interior metal, about to trick out the brakes when I get  some time on it……. Fun and Games.
