My first project
So after looking a good long while at Mk1 golf gti's I have found one I think in the right condition to restore. Bought at an auction for 115 pounds it needs alot of panels and is currently running on 3 cylinders and on a bodge up of a fuel pump and petrol can due to the fuel neck being more rust and water than steel. Anyway I hopefully will be documenting my progress.
I was thining back to Mars red, removing the spats on the arches and the black vinly surround on the tailgate. Keeping most of it quite concours but with porsche cookie cutters. I saw one in a VW mag not long and looked tremndous so someting like that. What do you guys think?
Just thought I would say hello.

Looks like it will keep you very busy over the winter! Just out of info, should a 1981 X-reg have those A-pillar wind deflectors on it?

I have no idea to be honest. They are coming off anyhow, but being stored if i decide to sell it. Cleaned it today, vacume and mould removal thanks to hot water and a bit of bleach. Also removed drivers wing, only minor patching needed which is nice. Forgot my camera tho! Anyway need to brush up on my welding skills but I'm sure this project will help.
P.s on 82 1600 gti, did they have the twin sticker stripes on? because I want to put them back if they did. Any info would be brill cheers.

That's going to keep you out of trouble. Good to see another 1600 being saved.

Took the other wing off, o dear. Needs plenty of patching or we think we know of a caddy knocking about so might try and chop what i need from that and stitch it in to make it neater and easier. Worked out the costs for panels and it's not as bad as I was thinking.
Photos soon of the damage…

So i have been de-sealing the passenger wing and its in not bad condition. the headlight bowl section is a little rusty but can be saved. the other side is knackerd, but there is a repair panel and top section to be ordered for that. A few pics anyway
Does anyone know where the spot welds are on the front panel/valence?

That looks like a good base for a resto - for ?100 or so I reckon you got yourself a bargain!
It looks quite similar to my resto which may come in handy for reference at some point
Keep up the good work 8)

Oh - spot welds for the front panel:
On each end of the slam panel and there is a little tab at each end with one on.
Down each side following the flange
Along each flange of the ends of the box section
Along the tabs that are folded into the chssis section
And the main box section is seam welded to the chassis rail
Sound a lot. If you are fitting a new panel then just cust most of it off with the grinder and then dressup the flanges. If keeping the panel it is best left in place unless you must take it of to do a repair.
Cheers

Done more today, i think the pictures explain alot of it.
A few questions though;
1) Where does the washer bottle go? Any pictures.
2) What stud pattern and spacing are mk 4 golf wheels? And will the hbs and rear axle fit a Mk1?
3) Where can I get underseal that will a close match to the original?

I believe the Mk4's are 5x100, like the Mk3's…
You can do a five stud conversion for a Mk1, though I don't know the details - The front is supposed to be a pain though. You might get more info on this from the Club Gti forums.
Nice progress on the Mk1 by the way!!!

which washer bottle front or rear? I'm guessing the front! it goes on the L hand side (as you look at the car) of the engine near the front
So many dubs so little time, so much rust
