Sorted my bootlid today…

You could see my sound deadening in the lid so made up some covering cards using new, original VW trim clips (don't use old ones as they don't hold) Found this out on my door cards…new ones stay fixed!

Holes in the lid…

Boot pop solenoid visible…

New card clipped in place…

Used an original boot card cover and trimmed it to match the rest.

Made the new cards using 4mm board…holes cut for trim clips (nice and tight)

Holes marked and drilled for trim clips (once again checked drill size for a nice tight fit)

Trim clips fixed and trim glued ready for covering…

Carpet glued and then stuck to the panel…

Panel clipped in place…

Continued with the rest of them unitl all were done…

Finsihed it off well and was really easy to do.

Spent 2 hours sctratching my head as I had alternator whine/noise coming through my speakers when the engine was running…how frustrating!

Re-did earth cables, alternator cables, grounded phono leads, checked antenna you name it, but could I sort it….could I f*@k!!

In the end I turned all amp gains down to zero. Turned headunit up to 75% full power. Then adjusted amp gains to each set of speakers individually.

OMG!! The system came alive. Better sounding than ever and no whine at all.  :D  :D

If you have system noise. Do this 1st. I was thinking I'd have to rip out my wiring and start again.

Now the amp is only running 1/4 power for my components and 1/2 for the sub and it sounds the nuts (I think so anyway!)

Not much left to do now…

Sub

Hi
When I get back to the Uk I will put some pictures up on my thread of the Hertz Slimline sub bolted to the crossbeam. I think I included a link to the website a week or so ago. The only alternative I found was a JL audio which was  still slim but not as robust as the Hertz (which has quite a rigid steel grill over the cone which would stop any damage from anything sliding around). It was also a hundred quid more and I had already kicked the butt out of my budget for the audio install.

The car is looking fantastic you must be very proud of what you have acheived…once you start it is addictive

Thanks everyone,

The interference wasn't my wiring or alternator. It was my over-eagerness to turn the gains up Full tilt on my amp!

Lesson learnt!

Get you bass box back in rich… You know you want to! There's no room in the boot even without it!!

That is looking amazing mate.

Think I might do that to my boot when I get round to doing it again ;-)

Thanks,

Really simple to do.

Gave the engine bay a clean through today to get rid of the dust left from the bodyshop.

Used some Meguiars engine dressing…great stuff. Spray on, leave for a while and wipe off excess.

Still have to fit my new scuttle cover tray.

Back to work tomorrow, so no more updates until next weekend probably.

Need to sort out agreed value insurance this week. If the garage burnt down I'd get £1500 back… if I'm lucky!!

Small update today.

Changed my steering wheel for a new shiny number.

Difficult getting the spline adaptor off, but manged it with a bearing splitter and 3 leg puller.

What do you think?

Steering Wheel

Very very nice! suits the car...I know this is cheeky but where did you get that one from as I think that would better suit the new door cards and interior of ours better than the aftermarket one currently fitted.

Thanks,

Got it off eBay with the boss for £75.

Much better than I thought it'd be. Really sets the whole car off somehow!?

Quite a bit smaller than the standard wheel.

Small steering wheel + 16" wheels + no
Power steering = Popeye arms!!!!

Just saw this on piston heads….. thought you may be interested, brand new tonneau cover in cream. OEM, still in box.

Thanks for the info on the wheel I'll have a look for one.

I have a power steering unit from Mk2 mania although it is not fitted yet, my wife struggles with it a bit when parking. I am sticking with 15", but I have a set of BBS RS to go on 8J on the front and 9J on the back so she will need a bit of help I think. First job on the car when I get back I think..will post how I get on on my thread.

Thanks for the link.

Think I've spent enough cash for a little while, so I'm going to re-colour mine.

Sorted my new speedo cable today. What a nightmare trying to remove it from the gearbox.

Took some major stick to get the little blighter to pop out!

Think this is why…

The shaft was bent going in so it wasn't lined up correctly. Hopefully this'll explain my jumpy speedo!

The new one went it easy peezy (almost too easy)

While I had my clock out I sorted the lack of dash lights. Would be nice to see how fast I was going at night time.

Thought I'd strip the speedo and also re-set my clocks after the re-build. Thanks to Rub Johnny for the info.

Clocks stripped…

It was quite easy to click the mileometer back to zero. Used some stiff wire and wound each cog back.

My new clock reading and we have light…

Sorted my electric window switch lights too…

Lastly a finishing touch to the bay. Got a new scuttle cover.

Before…

After…

Car is getting tuned up on Wednesday, then it's almost finished…until I find something else to do!

Well another 2 days of faffing around with my speedo and still no joy.

Still ticking. New cable and gearbox cog.

Must be the clock itself so ordered another one.

Sorted my leaky roof handles with the good old silicone under the 1st screw. Hasn't rained yet but I'm optimistic!

Just got a new grill to fit, along with a new temperature sensor… Hopefully that'll sort out my cold start issue.

Running without it connected at the moment and it runs fine!

Ordered my fancy dress for the AGM too!!!!!

Bit the bullet today and booked my car in for a paintwork detail before the AGM.

Going with a guy called Simon Belli (Prestige Detailing) Really nice guy and knows his stuff.

http://www.prestigedetailing.co.uk/

He's recently been working on a 1957 Testarossa (£20,000,000!!!) Should be OK working on my car!

Going to give the paintwork a full correction/detail including 2 stage machine polish, wet sand any areas that need doing, full wax and protection, hood protection treatment, and wheel treatment.

Uses G-Techiq products, which he says are the 'muts nuts' (I used the C4 trim restorer and agree)

Should give the car the best possible start and potection for a few months. Costing a few quid, but will be worth it. He said if I'm not happy, he won't take any money…can't argue with that.

Pics to follow… :D  :D  :D
