Mk1 GTI Cabby. The Project So Far... NOW SOLD :( !

Did a bit more this weekend.

Spent a few hours cleaning down some engine pipework and bits…

Clipped the brake and fuel lines back in the bay…

Fitted the rack back in. Couldn't find the knuckle nut & bolt though…Argh! Will get that sorted tomorrow.

Fitted my new steering rack gaiter. Thanks to Craig on here for sorting it out. Top guy!

The plan for this week is to get the wiring routed back through the bay, brake servo fitted, heater motor and a few other bits…

Anyone recommend decent stuff for shining up my water pipes and various other bits in the bay??? (engine bay dressing of some sort?)

Cheers.

Great work mate, the engine looks awesome!

Im in the process of doing this myself, where do you get all those shiny new bolts from? Or did you use your old ones? I have seen the 'Engine Detailing' Thread, but that seems like too much painstaking work for me! I have not got the patience to zinc plate everything! WHat did you do?

Post

Please ignore my last question! I seem to have missed a few pages of your thread! Thanks!

Keep up the good work, shes going to look beautiful!

Thanks,
Took everything to bits. Sent the nuts, bolts etc off to be plated by a specialist plating company.
Only cost £100 to do every nut and bolt including various others bits from the car.
It took masses of patience and a lot if photos to remember where everything went!
Good luck with yours…you doing a thread?

Thats a bargain! I havnt priced it up with anyone local to me yet but I assumed it would be extortionate considering a decent plating kit costs over £100! I was going to have a go myself , but think I may take your advice and leave it to the professionals! May save me a massive headache and a few quid!

I will be doing a build thread, im in the process of moving units at the moment and the new landlord has moved the move in date back to February  :banghead:. So looks like im going to be starting with the engine, not the bodywork, so will hopefully have the engine out and started in the next few weeks! ALl in the old mans garage  :dontknow:

Ill keep you posted when I get a thread started, ill be keeping my eye on yours too to keep me motivated!

hi mate… awesome job so far. cant wait to see it finished!
could you tell me how you rolled your arches as i need to do this to go lower and stop the rubbing

Post

Thanks,
Rolled my arches using an arch roller.
Gave the inside lips a good coat of rust treatment before rolling them. Then seam sealed afterwards and more rust treatment to stop any water getting in behind.
Just in the middle of tidying the visible arches up now, so that they look standard flared when the bodykit goes back on.
Ended up buying an arch roller from EBay. Using it, then selling it on EBay FOR £10 less than I paid! Cheaper than hiring one! LOL.

Bit more progress today…

Using a proper camera now so pics should be better. Only problem is that it shows up every spec of dust etc. Waiting on some 303 Aerospace protectant to arrive, so will give everything a good clean and shine up before the engine goes back in the bay.

Arches coming along nicely…still need some work though…

Fitted some water pipes to the engine (what a bi**ch the clips are to get on!)  :banghead:

One of the clips snapped as I was clamping it shut and nearly took me eye out! Close shave…

Finished prepping the gearbox and fitted the linkage parts and gearbox mount…

before…

after…

Sorted out my gearstick and linkage under the car…

Nice shiny stick with new bush kit…

Fitted back in car…

Front linkage fitted…a few bits need touching up here and there…

The underhood black from Frosts gives a nice finish but it's not the toughest. The satin Hammerite seems more durable.

Heater re-fitted and pipework through. What a mission getting the heater back in the car was…like the Krypton factor!

Re-routed the loom back into the bay. Still looks a bit untidy but I'll neaten it all up when the engine goes in and I can properly trace the wires…

Excuse the rusty bolt holding the scuttle support in place…that'll get changed!  :redfaced:

dusty dusty…

That's all for today. Not far off dropping the engine back in.

Hooray…progress today.

Started putting the gearbox onto the engine…with the help of my Dad. What a legend!

Gearbox fitted…

Another angle…

Now for the scary bit. Hoisted it into the engine bay and all went perfectly. One tiny chip on the paintwork but nothing that can't be sorted out.

The engine mounts all lined up 1st time without any shuffling around…

Empty engine bay…

Engine in!!!…

Took a few various shots. Amazing how small the engine looks now it's back in the bay….

Still plenty of work to do but managed to connect up the gear linkage, fit the dizzy and test fit the 4-1 manifold.

Going to need some heat wrap for the manifold as it's very close to the steering rack gaitor!

Start connecting up the wires and switches tomorrow.

Should start coming together quicte quick now.

Then it's roof off, windows out and drive it to the body shop for paint…can't wait!!

Sort out my fuel lines today and get the rad back in.

Hopefully next week I'll be starting it up again…

OMG it's cold working in the garage at the mo…my fingers and feet have frost bite I think!  :(

Anyway…more progress. Fuel lines fitted. Radiator fitted. Reservoir pipes, fuel filter and washer bottle. Horn & lights too. She has a face again!

Hopefully suspension, wishbones and driveshafts tomorrow… Please let the weather be a bit warmer tomorrow! 2 pairs of socks me thinks!

Should be running by next week hopefully?!

Got my front suspension and brakes refitted today.

Waiting for some exhaust heat wrap to arrive as its holding up putting the inlet manifold back on.  :x

Once that's done I'll be ready to fire her up…. Hopefully she'll start!

Some crappy pics of the suspension back together…

Sorted my gear linkage today. Wasn't going into gears properly, even though I'd put new bushes throughout.

Took all linkage parts off, gave them a good coat of grease (including the gear shifter ball and all bushes). Fitted all back together and made some adjustments under the shifter. 15mm gap, finger right in the middle of the plate underneath and hey presto! … Every gear smooth as silk. Nice and positive too. Cant wait to give it a proper blast.

Fitted accelerator, speedo and clutch cable (all new).

Hid the washer bottle pipe inside the drivers wing too as I thought it looks neater.

Still waiting on the exhaust heat wrap to arrive! Will be after Christmas now, when I get to finish the engine off I think.

Thanks. Really pleased now it's coming together.

Heat wrap arrived today, so while the Mrs was food shopping for Christmas day, I snuck off to the garage to crack on!

Started wrapping the manifold…

Finally all done…hopefully this will save my steering rack boot!

Next I got the inlet manifold on and the rest of the pipework fitted.

Only my MFA pipe, air filter box and exhaust to do and she'll be running again…

Oh…and HT leads - that would help!)

Happy Christmas to all!  :D

It runs!!

Considering I have had every part broken down into its smallest pieces, it runs really well. Needs a tune up though.

Had a few small niggles with leaking water pipes (naff VW clips) but after some new jubilee clips they were all sorted.

A couple of fuel lines were weeping too, but put new washers on and they were sorted.

Got a blow where my exhaust centre section meets the manifold, but I'll take it to my local exhaust specialist to get it sorted. Not easy to do from under the car in my garage.

Anyone have a standard servo…please let me know.

Went to bleed the brakes today and found that my servo is knackered. Typical!

Will get a vid of her running posted soon….
