Jimbo's Mk1 Golf 1.8t

It's still sort of working. Just took it off to clean it really….
A new turbo and manifold would be a lot of dough!

cheers  :cool:

i'm thinking when i get back down south, i'm gonna take the engine out for a 'quick' overhaul (sort the exhaust leaks out, theres a missing stud on the exhaust manifold, and sort out a top fill rad from a BMW…) and weld up a new quieter exhaust  ;)

removed the turbo from the manifold;

also noticed the manifold was cracking in places, so thought i'd may as well weld them back up;

had this old beetle inlet manifold lying around, which where the carb would sit, fits perfectly over the waste gate is;

Just need to purchase some flexi steel tubing, reroute it away from the engine bay, and i won't be dying of fumes inhalation any more!

Haven't had much spare time recently with all this lovely weather down in Cornwall! But finally got the exhaust manifold, turbo and down pipe back on, found out also, one exhaust stud was missing, went to replace it, and it already had a snapped one in the head :( So left that for now, but replaced the manifold nuts (2 were missing…!)
Just need to put the exhaust back on (will hopefully weld up a quieter one soon though).
And this arrived yesterday:

For the external watergate, not sure where to feed it yet though, out the bonnet maybe? Ha

Been tinkering with this on and off since… Drained the coolant;

Why's it this orange colour??

And why this rusty coloured gunk?

And replaced the over stretched coolant pipe;

Then obviously replenished it…

Fitted the side chrome trim;

And a rear bumper;

Just need to find a front one!
Will be going back on the road next pay day (Friday ;) )!

I love the look of your MK1, the colour, the stance, the wheels - nice!  :cool:

Your coolant is hopefully just old crud although under the cap it looks a little 'mayo' so maybe oil has got in there at some point.

I had the horrid brown water in my MK1 years back. I flushed the system through with a hose until it ran clear then topped up with that lovely pink coolant from VW and it never went brown again

Cheers people :)
I did flush the coolant out when I saw that stuff, and put fresh coolant in, but haven't ran it properly for a while, but hopefully going back on the road tonight/tomorrow!

Gave it a good clean/polish yesterday:
