79' Golf GL 1.1 series 1 Colibri Green

Ah sorry, if only I could play a mini violin ;)Did you not get chance to meet Jack the rat after all?

Well done to Dave. That was a beautiful swallowtail. I really wanted to stay the full day but everything was against me that day lol.

Engine is out ready for something more powerful. I've got a friend whose selling a complete engine for cheap so I went for it.

Whilst the engine is out I need to replace the clutch plate in the bulk head (as you can see another DIY repair fail).

I'm leaving the bodywork for a bit till I can get him mechanically sound. :ninja:

No, we didn't get to meet Jack but then he's nothing special I suppose…  ^_^

It's a shame you're butchering a series 1 and can't love him the way he left the factory. I can hear his little heart breaking from here.

Poor soul - I guess some just aren't as lucky as Oreo *sigh*  :(

Ok thought I'd get this project thread back in motion.

A few changes of wheels….

Decided to settle with the RM's with a bit of a kick. Lips need replacing but will be done as and when I cross that bridge.

Sunday 2/6/14:

Having the MOT and insurance expire, including running problems, I decided to SORN Jack and get the ball rolling with the resto. I had to do some serious clearing out in the garage for preparation so the progress is small.

I'm in no rush however.

Front lights, grill and bumper removed.

Rear lights and bumper removed (bumper shown in pic oops)

An example of 35 years of body corrosion. More to follow.

Also to add which isn't pictured, chrome trim removed, and partial wiring loom.

Monday 3/6/14:

Ok getting more time than I anticipated on the stripping. I attacked a bit more. Revealing more rust as expected. Its slighlty tearful knowing that the last time some of these fittings were touched was during factory.

Rear OS inner wing.

Original untouched plastic door membrane.

Rear bench and floor pan condition.

I managed to remove rear bench seat, seat belts, front seats, door cards, etc etc…

More to come.

Sounds good. Yea I know. I'm in search for a few s1 bits but they're like hens teeth with the popularity of them going up.

By the looks of it I doubt I will make AGM. If I can complete the resto before then it would be a miracle.
