Cracking thread this mate - you inspired me to get a zinc plating kit.

Got mine from here and cannot express how impressed I was with the service - highly recommend:

Does take some time but I enjoy all the preperation etc.  Chrissy can I ask: how do you go about cleaning all your bits (I use vinegar bath, then sand blast if any bits not fully clean before acid dip then electroplate) also how long do you dip it in the yellow pacivate and do you dry it with a heater or hairdryer? (I find the yellow pacivate can wipe off if I'm not careful - not sure if it is bonding at molecular level or whatever!)

Inspirational - top banana!

Thanks for all the comments guys. My OCD will be coming to an end soon!

big_bri: Its the original screenwash bottle just cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner.

Scamparelli: I have a similar plating kit but mines from Caswell's Europe. I don't use a car battery method though instead I use a Constant Current power supply, it gives me far more control.

I clean the parts first in hydrochloric acid 36% (brick & Patio Cleaner) diluted one part acid two parts water. Remember always acid into water NOT the other way around! I leave the part in the acid until it's clean and the old plating has come off (when the fizzing stops).

Then clean and degreased. I heat the eletrolyte with a fish tank heater to 30 degrees I also heat the yellow chromate to around 27 - 30 degrees too.

Zinc plating takes around 30 - 40 Minutes stiring eletrolyte every now and again to remove the bubbles off the parts. The power supply current is set to 0.9 volts and amps adjust automatically. Once plating has finished its rinsed in water.

Before chromating I use a bright acid dip. This is 5% Sulfuric Acid (Battery Acid) diluted with water for 3 - 5 seconds then rinsed and moved into the chromating tank.

The parts are in the yellow passivate tank for about 15 - 20 seconds with light movement in the solution. The longer it's in the passivate the darker it will become. The parts are then rinsed in water and dryed with a hairdryer.

Hope this helps?

Will post more photos over this weekend. It's nearly done!

Been finishing off the refit.

Zinc plated bonnet catch fitted

Brake fluid reservoir cleaned in ultrasonic cleaner and fitted to master cylinder

The ends of the braided fuel lines were cleaned then zinc plated.

New stainless steel clips used through out engine bay

Original 'Ear clamps' cleaned zinc plated then put into a blue passivate solution

Completed engine bay. Just have to finish off tidying up wires, fuel lines etc with cable ties and fit clutch cable and speedo cable.

Some before and after photos!

Will post photos of the rest of the car once it's cleaned up!

Just in case this causes you problems down the line (and you may have done this on purpose), the alternator brackets look like they are in a different location to where they were originally installed..

Cracking engine bay though! Are you using is on a day-to-day basis or is it gonna stay this clean from now on!?
