ABF 2.0 block 16v KR head, conversion. Help me please

Hi im nick
I have had my gti now for about 15 months, the last 6 months it hasnt moved.
I had been looking for an engine for a while, most of them were either too far away or too many miles.
But eventualy i have found one and i think it was worth the wait. I have bought the engine from BROOKSTER. When i went to look at the engine it was in peices, so i could see the combustion chambers an stuff and i was very happy with it so we shook hands on it. I was happy with him building it cos he clearly knows what he is doing, if you have seen his car you will understand.

My aim is to get it on the road as soon as possible but whilst taking my time and getting it right. If that makes sence.

BROOKSTER also painted the manifold and head cover for me. Should look good in a white bay

Hello Nick

The white MK1 Looks Mint , i always wanted a white one !!  :D

Here's Pix of your Engine Build and Specification.

2.0L 16V ABF Bottom End
KR 027 16V Gasflowed & Ported Head
ABF Cams fitted.
50mm Inlet Manifold
should be good for 175BHP 150lb/ft .

i used the ABF Block due to the Crank Sensor fitted already for future Electronic injection use, also i like the ABF's with the KR Head due to the higher compression arround 11.0 : 1

Also with the ABF Cams in the KR Head should pull really well.

First task is to get it on the road.
Then I will be putting coilovers on it and a stainless exhaust. Hope fully i shall have a new set of wheels before summer, havent decided which ones yet though.

Yeah they are nice :D , better than silver.
I shouldnt even be thinking about wheels yet though.

Can anyone give me any advise on which exhaust manifold to use with the abf block?

Was this not Nick Wilson's MK1 as AMD built the engine for him and done most of the work on the car, sure he was from Scottland!! as AMD were doing my car at the same time!!

One of the original performance Mk1s . Classic White MK1 16v build in 1988 from a Brand new shell and a Rocco 16v donor car.

pix for information etc on 16v conversions.

This Mk1 was miles ahead of its time:

- Built from scratch
- new Mk1 shell
- new Scirocco 16V donor car + crashed Campaign donor,
- nitrous propelled 295bhp
- rear discs
- ABT-finned sump (similar to today's Shricks)
- LSD
- seam welded
- works-rally spec AP/Lockheed brakes
- Autotech everything

Quoted in a VW Power & Style book as 'a marriage of the best European and American tuning parts'.

CCC wrote 'Perfection is a word that could be applied to this particular conversion. If Volkswagen Motorsport had done the job themselves, it couldn't have looked better'.

It was * 19 88 * when it was built…

As said in issue 1 of The Golf back in 1995….

…. "John finished the project and then left to return to Greece to do his two years' national service. If you're back in the UK now, John, we'd love to know what  happened to your car."

So I wasted no time asking John a few key questions last week? [:)]

The car:

JB: ?The car is alive and well, still in my possession in Greece, a little worse for wear, but 95% intact. It will need a little TLC before I can take any pictures now as for a year now I had to leave the car in open space and it will take some cleaning.?

CE: "how did you manage to research so thoroughly the VW performance market, when information was so limited? If you can name them, who were the greatest sources of assistance?"

JB: ? I can tell you that I did all of the research on the VW parts myself, as I had a long time admiration of the US aftermarket and Hot Rod industry, and the quality of the equipment always impressed me. Let's just say that I had a good eye for unique ideas. Talking to US tuners off course helped.?

CE: "Was it yourself that originally negotiated with Quaife to produce an ATB differential for the VW 020 gearbox?"

JB: ?As far as the Quaife, I can tell you that I was the first one in the world to get (a VW 020) one. I did not make it happen: Autotech in California had placed the order to have them made, and they were gracious enough to let me have the first one off the production line. That saved me buying an ATB that was made in England, shipped to the USA and then imported back.?

Latest pics received from John :

JB: "The car has a standard GOLF 16V engine on it now, as in 1992 I had installed a Full Race 2.2 Liter All Steel Bottom End (Billet 99mm crank, Carillo Rods and Ceramic coated and Cryo treated 84.5mm pistons, 12:1 CR) and a full BRMotorsport Group A Cylinder Head with 300 Degree Schrick Cams, on 45mm Throttlebodies. The car was very streetable and made 310hp at 7700rpm with a mild tune for Street fuel <will check with John about exact specs, nitrous etc, since this is V. high power >. The car was the first to have a HALTECH Stand Alone Engine Management system in Europe. I sold that engine to a Group E Scirocco owner here in Greece. The car has remained idle since then."

I have finaly got internet back.
I havent had much time to work on the car however i have done a few bits. shall put pictures up tomorow

Help needed on what to do with the drivebelt setup.
I have:

ABF Block
ABF water pump
DX alternator

The water pump pully from my 8v wont fit because the cam belt is much thicker on the 16v engine.
Do i need a water pump pully from a 16v?
Also can i use the 8v alternator on the 16v engine?

Done a bit of cleaning but it doesnt realy look that much cleaner. Im not that bothered though as this car is going to get driven. So long as it looks good on the outside.

The 8V alternator doesn't fit onto the 16V, due to the inlet manifold interfering with it. Also, the water pump (at least the flange/face section/pulley) is different on a 16V than 8V due to the thicker cambelt and a different line for the belts to run. Basically, I think its a little more away from the engine eg nearer the chassis rail of the car, once the engine's in. But its been a while since I had the two side-by-side!

I don't think there is a version of the ABF which was ever used without power steering. Am I right in assuming the ABF uses a ribbed belt to drive PS pump, water pump and alternator? I'd be tempted to change all the belts and pulleys to the configuration on the 9A engine without power steering. It might also be possible to obtain a custom size ribbed belt to run this, but without power steering. If you do this, make sure there is a clear line to run the belt without it snagging, or coming close, on another part of the engine/ancillaries. I know on my VR6 it was not possible to simply lose the PS pump, I needed to fabricate an idler pulley of my own.

PS Don't be tempted to use the PS pump running dry as an 'idler pulley' of sorts - without hydraulic fluid going through it, it will soon fail!

Thanks paul_c for your help, this means i need to buy a new alternator.
I already have a new belt, so i shall see if it fits with a new alternator

Nick

Use a KR alternator brackets, KR pulley wheel and KR crank pulley wheel.

should be loads at VW Breakers.

Have you got a 16V Loom yet ?

Post

Yeah i have a 16v loom which is from a mk1 so it shouldnt need modifying.
Can i use my old mk1 alternator if i use KR brakets and KR pully?

Ive almost got everything i need so im going to do a lot of work on it this week
