Hi,
i recently got the tracking done on my gti. The steering rack and tie rods are original I think as the tracking toe can only be adjusted from the offside. When getting the tracking done the person doing it had to screw the tie rod out about 6 turns (I had replaced wishbones and bush etc so I think this is why the toe was so far out).
Does anyone know the length of the thread that screws into the rod end? I want to check how much of the thread is left in the rod end after such a large adjustment.
Thanks

Have you looked at your track rods to check if 1 or both are adjustable, easy to spot as they have a locking nut fitted near the track rod end?

They screw in about 2 inches so six spins isn't that much.
Over here on the one piece inner and outer rod, we replace the inner on the right side with the 2 piece inner/outer from a Cabriolet that way they can get smaller adjustments equally….by adjusting the outer tie (track)rod only.

Only the drivers side is adjustable. The car drives straight as I have had the tracking done but the person that did it then said they couldn't be sure how much thread was left in the tie rod due to how much he had to adjusted it by. I have measured the exposed thread as you can see below.
There is approximately 27mm of thread showing and the nut is approx 8-10mm wide. If the threaded piece is 2 inches in total that leaves me with approx 13-15mm left in the track rod end.
If any one can confirm for definite the overall length of the threaded piece I'd be very grateful.
Thanks again for the replies so far
