Mk1 Cab 13inch wheels

Post

Hi. Dont know if this is a) a stupid question or b) already been asked but…
I have some 13inch wheels in mind for my cab, and my friend has told me
they wont fit over my brakes? Is this true? Is there any kind of conversion I
can do if so?
Would appreciate some help! Thanks :)

Depends on what brakes you have, best to mesure the brake disc.
I have standard 239mm disc brakes fitted to my GTi cabriolet and did fit some 13 inch wheels from my Mk1 Scirocco any brake disc bigger than 239mm and they won't fit as they are very close to the inner face of the wheel, I get stick on weights in side the wheel when the wheels are balanced are they very very close to the brake caliper!
Might depend on what style of wheel you was thinking of fitting as if it could cause problems fitting?
Ignore the cloth over the back of the car I was doing a bit of body repair.

Im looking at 13x7 and 13x8 Bullet Wheels.
Would a conversion to GTI brakes do the job?
Im seeing the car on Saturday (shes in a warehouse being restored)
So i'll get the measuring tape out and see what size they are at the moment.
Sounds like more hassle then its worth :(

What size engine is in the car and what model is it? GTi, or a carb feed clipper?

1.8 webber carb.
The wheels im looking at come with spigot rings.
I know these are so the wheel sits on the bore, but will that make a difference?

As stated the largest brakes fitted as standard ( afaik) to the mk1 is the 239 dia discs and these come with 13 inch wheels as standard. Don't see why fitting wider 13 inch wheels would cause extra brake clearance problems, its just not all wheels are made to the same dimensions. the extra width may cause other issues.

The wheels I fitted are 13 x 5.5 so don't now about the wider ones, Im sure someone else would be along with help.
I've gone back to 14 x 5.5 as fitted as standard but I'm keeping my car standard as it's used everyday.

main issue is if you have a later mk1 cabrio/scirocco the brake carriers have an extra hoop round the front which can hit the wheel depending on the design of them. To sort this you can fit earlier mk1 1.5-1.8 carriers which dont have the hoop and so more clearance. your brake calipers will swap over no problem, dont even have to open the hydraulic system :)

you might get away with spacers to clear, depends on the wheel offset, width, tyres and how low the car is though
