So basically I have an great turning circle going anti-clockwise and an awful one going clock wise.
If I put the steering in the straight forward position I can turn it 2 full turns anti-clockwise but only 1 and a bit clockwise.
Any idea what's gone wrong? could this be a tracking issue? Anyone know how many tuns of the wheel they get on there MK1 GTI?
Thanks in advance.

You need to centralize the steering rack by jacking up both sides of the front of the car then count turns from centre to full lock left then centre to full lock right then centralize the steering wheel, remove your steering wheel and put it on so it's straight then recheck you have the same amount of turns each way (it may take a few attempts to get the middle point on the steering rack)
You then take the car to get the tracking redone, the steering wheel will be in a funny position when you drive it. Make sure they clamp the steering wheel straight before starting work, then they will adjust the tracking so the car runs straight with the steering wheel straight.
Will be worth looking at the steering rack mounts to check nothing is broken and the steering rack is fixed firmly to the car.

best bet is start again I would say, get both rods off turn rack so its central then refit after setting both to the book spec in the haynes, then set tracking on the driver side arm only.
the entire steering rack comes out pretty easy on a mk1

it could also be that the track rod(s) been removed and not fitted back on the right amount, or the steering rack wasn't central before they were done.

Thanks for the info I'll get the front end up in the air and have a good check when I do the suspension. Sadly my MK4 clutch has gone.. Happily I'm using the MK1 as my daily so don't want to risk touching any of this until Ive done the clutch on my MK4.
