Gearbox or my Linkages. Not to sure

Post

I took her out for a drive last night as got a few weeks sorted on her.

As i was going up through the gears it all seemed fine. As i came to a set of lights i went into neutral, then when i went to drive off i could not find 1st, and the gear stick had gone all loose and could not find any of the gears. After a fiddle around i got 3rd and managed to pull away and found 4th too. but the other 3 gears and reverse i could not. It has a scirocco 1.8 5 speed box inside.

im not sure whats gone wrong but I've still not had chance to look yet as really tied up with work

many thanks

Sounds like your gearbox linkages - one of the rods may have popped off the ball joint, or the bushes may need replacing - not a big job, funk-star can help you out with parts

You should see one of the the linkage arms has fallen off, if you are lucky it's only fallen off one end and still attached to the car or you will need to buy another if it's lost on the the side of the road…

You can see both arms from above the gearbox so you should be able to fix the problem without the need to jack the car up or any tools.

If both arms are attached you will need to look further into the the linkage set up, you can use the same guide on replacing the bushes found on this web site.
