Bilstein, Koni or Spax suspension kits

Post

Anyone got experience or local for a test ride?

i am planning ditching the loathsome cheap coilovers that are currently on my GTi and want a setup for good fast road and potential odd track day use.

would prefer a sports suspension kit, rather than coilovers, as I value my comfort on the road and the derbyshire roads are pretty third world quality!

dont want to go particularly low, up to 40mm from standard Mk1 (20mm more than GTi).

considering either Bilstein B12 pro kit, Koni Sport Suspension Kit, Spax PSX Kit. Will also add uprated ARB and strut brace kits, along with poly bushing.

anyone with experience of any of those please share your thoughts. I am interested in a good compromise between handling and comfort. The Spax are adjustable, so perhaps better to get the best for road and track?

Anyone not too far from Chesterfield with any of these setups. Could I blag a ride to see what they're like?

thanks in advance for any experience shared.

I run Bilstein struts with Eibach lowering springs which lower about -30mm and are great quality with great ride comfort.

Lots of the boys I know all have the same set up.

You need to use the original front strut housings but this set up is so much better than my cheaper suspension kit that was on before.

I'm in the process of fitting this setup too. I replaced the top mounts with the Bilstein items. My car appeared  to have the original front inserts which were too long new.

The standard B4 inserts are a mismatch to the lowered springs, as the inserts should also be shorter.

Also, the Damper in the B12 kit has damping uprated by 30%, so stiffer, which is what I need for track use.

Bilstein B4's for use with springs lowering upto -40mm.

Maybe not for your track use but great for road use, I know 6 mates that have this set up for road use and it's perfect.

That's my understanding of them too. That's why I've just fitted them. Loads of MK1 owners running this setup who are more than happy with the results.

I have the Koni sport dampers with the lowered Eibach springs, it rides nicely and handles well.

I was told that the Eibach's are better than the springs that come with the Koni sport kit.

My New Year's resolutions are: 1. Stop making lists. B. Be more consistent. 7. Learn to count.

I've used koni shocks with eibachs before in my old mk1.. Adjustable dampness ones where good! Tweek them for track, and tweet back for comfort on the road. Handled good and was pleased.
If i wasn't doing a big 20v build I would of gone for them again, but at this moment in time I've just gone for new standard shocks with the koni sprigs as it seemed a waste of cash for the time being to just have it sat on them in the garage

Thanks guys. That combo seems to be a common recommendation and I am leaning that way at the mo.
