Is this what people are using to convert the side with no adjustment ? Took my car to the garage for tracking they said they can't do it properly as there is only one side to adjust but I could source a replacement for the other side ?

It is possible to set the tracking as most mk1 golfs came with 1 adjustable track rod from new and there was never a problem. I would find another garage which is able to adjust it for you.
May be a good idea to check the steering wheel is central by jacking up the front of the car and count the turns lock to lock and make sure the steering wheel is set in the middle, if not remove the steering wheel and put it right then get your tracking done.

aye find a different garage as obviously they dont know VWs, you should only ever adjust tracking on the driver side, the left side is fixed from new and even if you repalce it with an adjustible type this must be kept to the factory length as specified in the haynes/bentley/elsawin.

if your driver side length is way off the passenger side then possibly rack isnt central or the track rods were not fitted the right distance on the rack, its not a case of screw them on till they stop!

1st you need to make sure the rack is central, once both track rods are removed adjust it so the threads poking out either side are the same, then set all your the measurements as per:

taking the entire rack off the car is pretty easy on a mk1, its a doddle doing all of the above if you do that. spare a thought for us poor mk2 golf owners where any kind of steering rack job is a proper nightmare
