02j gearbox cracked

Post

Haven't posted anything on here in years but in desperate need of some knowledge. The 02j box on my mk1 has cracked/broken to pieces. My own stupid fault for not checking the fitment of the bolts i got with my new mounts :banghead:. I have an old 02a box at home. My question is, can i swap out the internals from the 02j to the 02a case or are there differences? Have a peloquin lsd in the cracked 02j box that would need swapping also. If its not an option then I guess I'll be looking for an 02j case.

You would be able to use the 02a casing. You will however need to use the selector tower from the 02j and the bottom cup, the part with VW on it. You will need to replace the bearings and use ones for an 02a when rebuilding. If you have a gearbox specialist local to you then speak to them about setting up load on the bearings and rebuilding it. Not something I would jump into with the right equipment to set it up, or it could be an expensive third rebuild!

Thanks for that. I thought someone out there would know the answer. I wanted the car back on the road quickly to make the most of the dry weather. So I brought a cheap gear puller, stripped the box and went for it in the end. Actually used some new 02j bearings as they were the same as the o2a ones. My local gearbox place fitted the bearings and set the preload for me. I've put over 1k miles on it already with no issues. Other than needing an extra engine side drive flange seal to fit the 02js bolt on flanges it all went together quite well, didn't hit the wallet too hard and most importantly it meant i could finally rack up some miles in my golf before the winter weather rolled in. Cheers.
