stalling issue 1.8 weber

carb issue?

Ahh well I replaced my problem pooburg and fitted a recon Weber that came off a running car.
Problem is I cannot get it to tick over unless I rev the carb, even with the idle screw wound in it won't hold revs and will stall.
There are no air leaks around the carb, I've replaced plugs, rotor, cap, leads, coil and fuel filter!!
Has been timed but struggle to get it bang on without the engine running properly.
It has the advanced dizzy but unsure 100% about if I need the vacuum plugged in to time it and at what degree.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Have you adjusted the mixture screw as well as the idle screw?

Idele mixture screw is 2 turns out….I've had a little play since I posted.
Now it starts sort of fine…ticks over with idle screw at around 2/  2-1/2 turns out, but it struggles to rev and pops back through the carb..
I've since checked the timing whilst running at around 900/1000 rpm and have the diamond timing Mark spot on with the vacuum pipe connected.
When it pops it's a struggle to rev and sounds boggy.

Is there another mixture screw?

On my Mk1 Scirocco I have a slightly different Webber, a DMTR and there is a idle adjustment screw and a screw to set the mixture, if the carb is running to rich it will back fire but if the timing is out it will also cause problems.
I'm not 100% sure but I thought you unplugged the vacuum advance and blocked it off to do the timing? I dont use a timing light as I set mine by driving it and advancing till it pinks then backing it off till it stops pinking under load.

Cool thanks, can anyone confirm if I need the vac line connected or not.

Thanks

for the carb dizzy you leave the vacuum pipe connected and set the timing to 18deg BTDC, which is the big diamond marker on your flywheel. if you fit a GTI dizzy then the timign is 6 deg BTDC with the vac line disconnected and plugged (so the same setup procedure as a GTI)
