Leaking fuel when turning left?

Post

Hey All,

Need some help again please. Have put up with it for a while but I'm getting increasingly nervous when turning left now!

A little history;

Since buying the car I have replaced the fuel tank (Supplied by VW Heritage) and filler neck (Stainless Steel supplied by Crazy Quiffs). All work was carried out by a mechanic who has undertook a lot of the work on my car. The tank supplied did not have a bracket? to hold the breather hose in place so it dangles…

Ok…

My problem now is when I take a left turn at speed you notice a trail of fuel from behind the car, so much so that it knocks the rear wheel out and you in essence slide out of your turn, sounds cool but it really isn't when your not expecting it!! The problem gets increasingly worse the fuller the tank is. Through my own nerves I no longer fill the tank above £25's worth of fuel.

Any thoughts or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You really need to jack the car up and get your head under there, you should see some kind a markings left by the fuel coming out of the fuel tank, check the seal by the lift pump/sender is in tack and there if fuel is escaping there must be a hole or hose come off the tank, just because it's new does not mean fuel should come out during cornering.
Get it checked out soner that later as a car fire is not any fun…

Thank you Mark for the advice - Will get it across to the garage in the new year and get them to have a look. It's clearly not normal for it to happen and I spent good money to bring the tank and surrounding equipment into good order for the years ahead.

Hello, did you swap the non return flap into your new tank? can send you a pic if needed.

Hi mate,
Paid a garage to complete the work… A Picture would help so I can show the garage? The mechanic is a family friend so it won't be an awkward conversation.

Cheers :)

Will sort a pic out when I get back from work, Can remember I got a new tank and it didnt have one fitted. easy fit, no need to remove tank, just take off the rubber pipe between tank and filler neck pipe. catch you later.

Is it not just fuel coming out of the breather if it is just dangling down?

Are these parts that you can source?? Never seen one before. At least I can print and take this to the garage!

Thank you for taking the time out to get the photo for me!

This was my first thought because the breather hose exit sits to the left of the car (As you look at it from the rear) So if you were to turn left there's a good chance the petrol is filling up the hose and spilling out because of the angle of the pipe? But how would I go about securing the hose back to the tank??

I was lucky enough to still have the old tank so I removed the flap and bashed it into the to the new one. Car is a 82 gti hardtop. Can only think its there to stop fuel surge up the filler neck under cornering?

Makes sense but given the angle it disperses on cornering I'm swayed more towards the breather hose. Will keep an eye out for the part none the less and will mention it to my mechanic because it's a valid point. Thank you.
