Intermittent howling noise causing fuel starvation

Post

Hi all,

My 1.8 1993 GTI Sportline has recently been suffering from fuel starvation problems. I have had a service, replaced the spark plugs, new leads, new fuel pump and filter. However, the problem is still occurring intermittently where there sounds to be a howling/whistling noise (possibly the fuel pump??) before the engine stalls. This has happened both whilst driving where it will bunny hop and start again through a jump start or whilst coming to a stop, taking a few attempts to turn over and start again. A couple of garages have now had a look and it tends to behave itself where no problems have been found. I was thinking whether the fault could possibly be electrical and since it has been happening the speedo dial has been faulty and jumping around. Could this be connected?

Hope somebody can help.

Many thanks,

Del

Could be the lift pump inside the fuel tank, this pump lifts the fuel out and helps the main pump.
When mine went it started to play up for a couple of months, the fuel pump would get loud and the car would stall or have no go etc, if I left it for a few minutes it would be fine.
Fitted a new lift pump problem solved.
Also check the filter on the end of the lift pump as it can get blocked by bits of rust/dirt inside the tank.

Pump looks like this and you can see the filter in the picture as well.
You will problerly also need to change the fuel pipe which connects the lift pump to the sender (its about 5cm long) as this can also fall apart and clog thing up, there was some info on here about what hose to use as its inside the fuel tank and covered in petrol so rubber fuel hose seems to fall apart after a couple of years in there, I've still got a rubber hose in there after a year but looking to find some proper hose in the not to distance future.

Speedo jumping has nothing to do with anything electrical, no electrics involed, as this is a old car when speedos were run from a cog inside the gearbox turning a square cable connected to the speedo, if its jumping around alot it means the cable is about to break.
