cutting out...

Post

So i know this is not a new issue on the forum however after reading a few old posts none seem to have the same symptoms as mine.
I have a 1992 cab acapulco (germany only edition)
I drove over from germany last week with no incident and have been driving around daily without incident also..
Yesterday i made a trip to warminster (about 3 hours)
All was fine however after 2 hours the car started to splutter all of a sudden and a severe loss in power followed..
I dipped the clutch and the revs hit the floor and it stalled.
It started back up instantly only to drive another 5 minutes then it happened again.. and again and again
Then it was fine for the rest of my journey.
After my visit in warminster (car sitting for 5 hours) a top up of coolant, oil check etc etc all seemed fine i set off again… 2 hours in the same happened but even worse.. this time it wouldnt start again..
After leaving it sitting for 20 minutes it started again and i finished my journey LUCKILY
After researching forums etc etc im 70% sure it could be a fueling issue… most likely fuel pump overheating..
Im also going to check the filters and drag a magnet around the tank..
The filler neck seems in good condition with no signs of rust..

My question to you wonderful people is is there anything else anyone could recommend checking??
Could i be chasing the wrong possible cause??
Would a dodgy relay be the cause ??

There seems endless things to check and i dont really want to pump unnecessary money in..

Thanks in advance guys

Fuel flow problem, most likely but…

How hot was it yesterday where you were and did the cooling fan come all the time, often or not at all?

Not saying the above is directly linked to the problem but the Info helps build a fuller picture of your driving conditions.

when it cut did all the dash warning lights come on? also did you happen to hear the fuel pump running on assuming its a fuel injection model.

also if it is a fuel injection model since its a post-84 it will have a lifter pump inside the tank, this may have failed which leads to the main pump having to work harder to pull fuel up from the tank. if you're lucky just changing this will solve the problem, if not the main pump may be damaged now and also require replacing

It was roughly around 23 degrees it was fine in traffic the temp held stable at around 92-94 according to the read out on the dash and the needle was good also..

As far as i could tell the coolong fan was running as far as warning lights go only the battery and oil came on but thats only after it cut out

Fuel pump did its usual humming before starting up yes..

I can only assume fueling issues at tjis point as nothing else is screaming out at me..

I was leaning more towards lift pump aswel tbh i will see what condition its in when i take the panel off to drag the magnet around the tank..

Would that being inop cause the main pump to overheat then ?? Is assume iy would through strain..

Replacing the parts isnt an issue neither is cost at present i just really nees to get this sorted before i drive back to germany..

Thanks guys

fact the lights come on suggests that the ignition power isnt the cause, though it may be spark system related still. if the lights went dead then id be suggesting you look at the ignition switch, but then again it may be power is being lost due to a wire fault between the switch and coil somewhere, rather than due to a problem with the switch itself.

one way to rule out ignition power issues is run a wire between the battery + and the coil +, obv this is just for testing and if you do decide to run the car like this take care how you route it and I'd put a fuse inline just in case.  if car runs just fine then look into the wiring, possibly an old alarm or immobiliser is causing the issue.

yes the main pump needs a constant supply of fuel as it lubricates the internals, if it runs dry say due to cornering it will start to eat itself. plus it isnt designed to suck fuel up and out of the tank so it strains

a quick way to check lifter is disconnect one of the lines to the main pump and turn key 1 clcik, if your fuel system normally primes with the ignition then you will hear the intank pump. if no noise then its dead or the wiring to it is bad :)  its worth checking it actually pumps fuel as well just in case, but normally they just stop altogether

check the fuel pump relay and fuse sockets for damage and corrosion, on my mk2 i had a dud fusebox which lead to random cutting out due to water damage i guess, eventually the fuel pump fuse socket started to melt!
