ah ok, looks like the stalk fell apart at some point and wasnt put together properly I recon.  If your happy with how it is now then I wouldnt worry, you can always buy a new stalk later on if you want.

Lol that my old stalk, my new one I still had to remove the brass pin but with this old stalk the clip to engage wash wipe was broken so had to replace a new stalk but then I had the issue with the blowing fuses so removed one pin now it's all good, I think the previous owner must had a issue so must of broken the clip that engages wash/wipe so It didn't blow any fuses

Mmm come to think of it would there be a earth on for the ignition barrel because when that pin was still in and touched the ignition barel when wash/wipe was engaged it would blow lol

Post

yes the barrel should be earthed, if you've had same on 2 stalks then I recon you have damage in the loom somewhere. I would be having a damn good look!

Mmm where is the earth for the barrel on these, how shal I go about looking and where do I trace it to thanks, lol not all went well as I thought

Its in the engine bay, from the rack to bulkhead. But the steerign column needs to be earthed for the horn to work so this isnt the problem :)

I would start by tracing the wirign from the stalks as best you can, look for any damage and any random bits of wiring tape as this is usually a sign that bodgery may be afoot

Lol there's bodgery where I see the previous owner installed electric windows which don't work so wiring for that also the rear earth for lights ok the boot floor is corroded there is a earth on battery tht is corroded which goes to where the heater blower and wipers are to a metal plate just above the coil, don't know what's that's for and one wire on the ignition barel has tape on it so going to see if this may be the cause, but everything seems to work ok I had her started and been testing everything and all seems good so far so don't know why it blew when that pin was on the stalk, I have sprayed contact cleaner and used sand paper to clean relays and covered it in a plastic bag so no water can get to it had it started for 1-2 hours with heaters on so everything drys up if there is more damp, another issue is on start up the battery light appears on dash but once reved it goes and then it's ok, would this be alternator it was ok before but I was flushing my system out so maybe some water might have gone there lol anyway back to my day job so will be back on the mk1 Sunday earliest lol bet everyone's like thank god we have a break from him till Sunday lol have a lovely weekend all

yeah alternator fault would explain battery light, it may just be the brush pack on the rear take it off and buff up the 2 metal contact points plus make sure brushes are ok :)

You seem to have the car electrics from hell!
Who ever owned the car before you should not be touching electric wiring as it seems everything has been messed with.
Glad you are finally getting things sorted and once done you will know they are all in good shape.
Keep at it, it will be worth it once it's done.

I will be at it it's got sub remote wires going to the back the speaker wires are cut and not connected it seems to have insulation tape in most wires I'm going to see what it does once I got it on the road at the moment it's on the drive but I am trying to sort out anything I can find ie; naked or corroded wires but once moted and on the road I will soon find out what is really wrong with it lol when I spend some time with it at the moment can't seem to find a place to start have cleaned fuse box have taken some insulation tape off but it looks like it's only covering the plastic  that has perished from the wires but like i said I'm only going to fine out the real issues once it's on the road , do we all agree lol

Thanks mark il have a look at that that's really good for lasting. 25 years lol hopefully work more on it tommoro want it ready for the mot soon so she can be driven and after sitting for 9 years becoming a rusty bucket I got the panels done that needed doing for mot now it's case of mechanical and electrical so once on the road all soon will come to light what needs doing in those places, then once they are sorted hopefully she be I'm the body shop for the final episode, thanks again mark il look in to those brushes

This is what the old and new one looked like, there was not alot of meat left on the old one. You'll need a short stubby screw driver to get to one of the screws out as access is tight but no need to remove the alternator.
