Various Gauge Issues

Post

Hey All!

I have a few issues with gauges on my 1987 Cabby GTI. My Fuel and temperature guage do not work at all, The fuel guage goes straight to full and the temp doesn't register anything. Also the oil pressure light continually flashes with no buzzing.

My question is do you think these faults could be linked or am i looking at three seperate issues.

Cheers! :-)

I've now managed to fix the issue with temp gauge. The previous owner for some reason had snipped the wire behind the fuse box :S

Any one have an idea for the fuel gauge and oil sensor?

Tried to find a previous post similar but all the fuel guages seem to be stuck on empty not full?

Thanks!

Have you checked the fuel sender in the tank? If the sender is stuck reading full, that could be the cause.

Not too difficult. Lift the rear bench seat and there is a circular access panel underneath held by three screws. Undo these and remove plate. You will then see the top of the sender with an electric plug (undo it) and two fuel lines. Make a note of which fuel line goes to which outlet, then undo the clamps and pull off the pipes. To undo the sender use a large screwdriver in one of the three cutouts on the edge and knock gently with a mallet to twist the sender anti-clockwise, doesn't move far to disengage. Then thje tricky bit - carefully lift out the sender, manoevrig it out of the hole - be careful, at the bottom is a filter gauze on the end of the lift pump, this can fall off back into the tank if you catch it on the edge of the hole (I know - it happened to me). Cover up the hole to keep fumes in tank, then reconnect the plug to the sender, ignition on and move the float manually up and down, and see if the guage responds. The signal wire is the lilac/black ( the other two wires are power to/from the lift pump).

Hey,

I've finally managed to get time to remove the sender. When I moved the sender outside the tank it made no difference just still read as full. Would it be worth replacing?

Cheers :-)

Replacement senders are very hard to find. but you can do a test first. If you have got a Haynes, it gives instructions in the electrical section. This should help narrow down if the fault is in the sender, the gauge, or the wiring.
