Stopping your Water temp light flashing

Post

If you have a flashing temp light and it's doing your head in because the cluster has issues, in the pic below my finger is pointing to the nut that stops this light from flashing, just remove the nut and the light stops.
The gauge needle still works and the light isn't needed really, if it works then leave well alone, but mine had an issue with this light. As long as the fan comes on when the needle gets 3/4 of the way your fine :) C:\fakepath\image.jpg

That's good to know, mines been flashing or been working fine for about 6 years now, I've just stopped looking at it so might give this a try.

common problem is poor clock ribbon connector.
Clean the contacts on the blue mylar ribbon where they go into the multi plug. Wrap a couple of turns of electrical tape around the stub it fits over, this then pads the contact out so once there back in place the contact is much firmer and better.

The flashing light is for low coolant level too on certain models.

yeah i looked at the contacts but nothing.

i just took the nut off at the connection so its stopped now.

Mine does this intermittently which bugs the  out of me. I get all paranoid when things flash at me. So much so I tested the temp at the rad and various components with the temperature probe on my voltmeter and that came back all good. I've checked the filler tank level repeatedly and wiggled the wires on that to no avail. It comes on and goes off based on the attitude of the car, especially downhill. I would rather not remove a low level warning light but what use is a warning once you stop paying attention to it?

its only a level light, i would say not having it would make you physically check the level other than rely on what could be a faulty light.
im use to driving beach buggys and my V8 ford anglia which is gone now. i am building another buggy though, older cars just dont have that sort of technology - but i am use to this.
all you need is the gauge in my opinion, if it goes past 3/4 of the way, this means your fan has not come on and then ya in trouble, thats all you need to remember ;)

Think its also supposed to flash when its about to over heat, drawing your attention to the gauge.

Steam coming from under the bonnet will also achieve the same result.

yeah correct ;)
its ok as long as your gauge stays inside the normal zone - which for people who have original handbooks will say in there.

id like my light to work but im putting it down to cluster not working as it should now :( cry!!

if your light is intermittent and you have level warning try pulling the relay first, if that stops it look at level sensor, wiring and relay.

the level sensor terminals can get dirty so buff em, the wiring can corrode and relays can rust out. one common problem is the seals go on level sensor pins and coolant wicks up the wires to the relay. I see this on around 90% of the mk1 looms i have in to upgrade

The OP advice is good if all other troubleshooting avenues fail and issue is down to faulty clocks :)

cool thanks, yeah i tryed relay, pulled that out and as i showed in the pics on another thread it was very corroded!
but the light still flashed.
the temp sensor is new and works fine.

earths are good so i have a small issue with my clocks :( but i did manage to repair my mpg digital read out, the 3 pins that plug into the back of the clocks had broken off, i stuck these back with a tiny bit of super glue and hey presto!!!!!!

its all good - love the car :)
