My Golf is soon due for an MOT. It is going to fail as the speedometer needle has snappen and fallen off. The stump does not move so I assume that the whole thing is knackered. I want to try to source the replacement bits before it gets to the garage.

Will is be a case of having to replace the entire dash console/unit?

I have a k reg cabby (1992) - will i need a unit from an identical vehicle? The GTI version is very similar (and seeminly easier to find 2nd hand) but not sure if it will fit.

Also (and I know this is an idiots question) but what happens about the change in mileage?

I believe you can just change the bit you need, but might be easier to just change the whole unit if your in a hurry. It may sound daft but i dont remember anyone ever looking at my speedo during an MOT. I am sure some one on here will know for sure.

any later mk1 cluster will fit, i.e. the single pod type not the earlier dual pod on s1 dash :)

the gti dash will just function as a digital clock if you fit it to your car without adding the mfa wiring

mostmk1 clocks use similar parts, but the earlier stlye may differ slightly. certainly if they look the same as yours but with mfa theres a good change the speedo will swap

Yeah believe you are right, working speedo not a mot requirement, although handy thing to have.

The needle missing is an MOT failure but they may not notice as there is no road test.

From the MOT Manual,

6.7 Speedometer
Reason for Rejection:
2.
Speedometer incomplete, clearly
inoperative or the dial glass
broken or missing.

You can strip the dash apart and just change the needle but they tend to be very fragile (as you now know) and you will most likely break it when pulling it off the donor clock.

If you swap the speedo head you can adjust the mileage displayed back to the genuine reading if you want to but I wont say how on here! (it's not hard to work out).

1983 Mk1, 1.8 Gti, stripped out, ongoing project, track car only.
1990 Mk1 Cabrio, 1.8 8v Turbo, G60 ECU, long term project (17 years so far)!
2008 T5 LWB, 1.9 Tdi, to be converted to camper when I've finished using it as a van!
1999 Audi A4 Avant Quattro, 2.5 Tdi, currently off the road, more work required.

Just to reiterate, of course i know you should have a working speedo for your MOT, my point was that with no road test you might get away with it. maybe i should have explained it a bit better.
