Sparking issues Mk1 gti '83

Hoping the likes of RubJonny may be able to advise on my headache! Car's been stood and not run for 3 months but previously had daily use over the previous two years. Reason it is stood is the fuel pump didn't work on it's last outing and conked out 400m from my starting point. Friend towed me and wrenched the front panel away from it's mounting points…. Disaster.. However the fuel pump would prime when the hazard warning light switch was turned on?!

Now getting the car to stage of putting a replacement front panel in and wanting to start the car.

Not getting any spark from the main lead from the coil when turning the engine over. The coil is wired up correctly, and I have thoroughly cleaned the 3-wire connector into the dizzy and cleaned up the cap.

Have replaced the coil, and the module.

At present when key is turned to first position, I get the fuel pump constantly whirring (louder than previous I swear) and the oil pressure buzzer sounding in the cockpit.

The only time I get a spark is when the key is in position 1 when using a power probe from the battery and earthing the coil.

Does this suggest the distributor is knackered?

you have other issues if fuel pump is constantly running and oil buzzer sounding, to start with check all brown wires you can find near/above the fusebox fior corrosion and make sure non are hanging about loose. make sure the earth points are all clean too

Awesome Rubjonny, The crown earth was corroded so badly on two spades (including the main black thick earth) that it came away so easily.. Replaced and engine fired up first time.

Many thanks! Now I have a working spare coil,  and module…!!!
