Looks like this

Do your parking lights work? Put the indicator on left turn without the key or ignition on you should have both the front and rear light on but only on the left side, or right indicator = right side.
I would not use Halfords unless you need something for your bike, they are so expensive…
Euro car parts etc so much cheaper for bulbs.

the sidelights are separate and use the mini ba9 type bulbs, look closely at the outer light you should see a small hole near the bottom for the sidelight bulb holders. sidelight wire colours are grey/black and brown one one side and grey/red and brown on the other.
the reason it may seem like the sidelights are working without the bulbs may be that you have a later mk1 with the dimdip resistor fitted, which brings the dipped beam on dim with the sides. if this is so the 'sidelightss' will always look yellow no matter what H4 bulbs you fit as they will be runnign on reduced voltage.to fix this you need to remove the dimdip resistor and fit white sidelight bulbs. I found that all the bulbs I tried were yellow so I went for some heavy duty automotive LED bulbs that sorted it.
the dimdip resistor on a mk1 is on the passenger side i believe near the scuttle, look for a ceramic coil about the size of a packet of polos with a yellow wire out of each end, trace the wires back to the 2 pin plug and disconnect it.

its not required by law or mot so its fine to bin it, i always recommend to do so as the wires can short out and if this happens your lighting loom will catch fire! its worse problem on mk2 golfs due to the wiring runnign over a lip of metal on the chassis leg that can rub thru the wires
