Rewiring Mk1 Golf

Post

you could get a later mk1/2 carb front flange then you can use the correct thermoswitches and temp sender, the plugs there will plug in

otherwise match the plug colours to the thermoswitch colours for the grey and red thermoswitches, chop plugs off and crimp spades. the black plug is for the dash temp, find the single pin black sensor on the front or side flange. chop plug and crimp a spade to the red/yellow, the brown is no longer needed.

yellow and black/yellow is for the dimdip resistor, ignore. yellow/white and brown is for front fogs

green/red and brown is windscreen washer pump

black wire spade is ignition live for carb heater, should be a spade on carb loom for it. the red/white spade goes to the inlet heater, can see matching spade to the right of the inlet. other random pcarb plugs on your engine loom not needed on a weber carb :)

red and brown is radiator fan, shoudl be matchign plug on the rad fan loom. unless its an early car then the wires were hardwired to the lighting loom. crimp spades on. red is perm live to the rad fan thermoswitch, brown is earth for the fan motor :)

Wiring is finally all in and crimped off but I have a new problem :$Im assuming because the wiring loom I have fitted is from a newer cabby and mine is 82 reg. I have no wires for the brake lights in the loom, I have 2, 2 pin connections on the master cylinder but no wires left except those for fogs, and dimdip resistor….. what should I do?

Thanks

there should be a 2 pin spade plug on the lighting loom, red/yellow and red/black c1 and 3. this is where you run your brake lights :)

I cant find it anywhere on the new loom but on the old loom ive found the two 2 pin spades which looks like they connect either side of the master cylinder. Im wandering if my new loom is off a car that had a different brake light system?

Is there any way i can wire this into the new loom/fuse box.

I forgot to mention I have upgraded from the s1 fusebox to the s2 and loom, if that makes a difference.

Thanks :)

it should be there on your s2 loom, it will only be a short biut of wire say couple of inches. then on tintop the wiring loom to the brake switches goes there, or late cab and rocco a loom from the brake pedal switch plugs in

it was there all along, like you said 2 inches long on the fuse box end,I was looking in the engine bay for it joined the wires to the old plugs and its sorted.

Im on to the dash loom now and its pretty straight forward although ive got a couple of connections on the fuse box end Im not sure of and just want to check with before I fit the fuse box in.

1. yellow one I think runs to the long instrument panel plug

2. grey/green + blue/grey run to the strange plug in the bottom photo, this is around the headlight/dimmer switch area.

3. grey/yellow has a strange plug on the fusebox IMAG0409.jpg end IMAG0410.jpg IMAG0408.jpg IMAG0414.jpg

1. goes to the plug M on the fusebox its the power for the fog light switch

2. oil pressure switch, should be a female spade on engine loom that plugs to this and goes to the 0.3bar switch on side of the head

3. handbrake switch connector, matchmaking plug from the handbrake switch

4. brake fluid/handbrake warning light

Thanks for your reply rubjonny, ive sorted that out only problem is with the yellow oil pressure switch wire theres no where for it to plug into behind fusebox. The wire from the oil switch on the side of the block seems to go straight into the plug on the fusebox,

Should I just cut and join avoiding the fusebox plug or tap into it? ……if that makes sense.

Thanks for your help

right you have a missmatch of engine and dash looms then, you can either chop the wire off the engine loom and crimp a female spade, or swap the oil temp and oil pressure wires on the dash clock loom plug :)
