Replacement ignition switch seems duff - anyone had similar problems?

Hi all,

My ignition switch has been dodgy - had the issue where you turn the key and the car sometime starts and some time doesn't, but starts every time if you take a live from the battery to the spade on the starter.  I ordered a new one from VW Heritage which I fitted today.  Took the old switch out and put the new one in.  The first thing I noted was whereas the old switch fitted very well into the barrel, the replacement one didn't and the face with the pins wasn't flush with the rear of the barrel.  I put everything back together anyway and tried starting the car.  Turning the key was nowhere near as smooth as with the original switch, however the car fired up when I turned the key to the cranking position.  Then promptly stopped when I moved the key back to the normal driving position (not too sure on the terminology for key positions!).  Tried again, same thing.  Turned the key to the usual driving position without going all the way to the crank position, battery light came on as normal then went out.  The headlights and blower wouldn't work either. Took the barrel off again, put my old switch back in and the lights and blower work as they should, but obviously I still have to jump the starter manually!  So I looks like my replacement switch is dodgy too.  It looks pretty much identical to the original switch, and its made by JP Group, and described as Classic Line.  Has anyone had one of these before, or can anyone recommend a specific switch to use?  It could be just that I'm unlucky and I've got a duff one!

Cheers,

Andy
