Mk1 Caddy Dashboard and interior lights

Post

Help?

Just got a mk1 (golf) caddy.

Starting to notice little things I want to sort as they bug me more than bigger things!

On the dash the headlight switch and handbrake light isn't working. Handbrake light cable it plugged in at the handbrake Is the bulbs on the back of them that possibly just don't work anymore? Or could it be a bit more indepth.

Also the interior light doesn't work when you open the doors but I have read up another topic and cleaned the terminals but nothing. I only have a switch on the drivers side too.

Thanks in advance😁

Headlight switch light, twiddle the reostat that contols the dash lighting, has it been turned right down?

Handbrake, check the switch under the handbrake, should be able to push it with your fingers.

On the Caddy I had only the drivers side door had an interior light switch. Check the light switch is turned on (on the light itself)

Don't think the handbrake and interior light are connected (apart from they are circuits in the same vehicle)

Both the handbrake and door switch are about as simple a circuit as you can get (i.e. a switch that's on or off). If you haven't already get a multimeter, even a sub 10 quid one and trace the +12v, checking wires, connectors and the switchs themselves.

Speedo/clock light up fine, can turn it up and down. Just the headlight switch and handbrake light don't light up.

I did try the switch on the interior light but it's only on the passenger side.

I'll have a check for the wiring and the handbrake!

There's a little bulb in the headlight switch which is very dim, it lights up as soon as you switch the ignition on and stays on all the time so it's normal for them to blow.
Remove the headlight switch and you should see a little bulb holder which you twist to remove.

Have you checked the bulb for the interior light?

I have fixed the door switch. Just needed a very good clean up and a new screw!

I found the bulb in the switch had gone so going to get a new one. Are they a 286 bulb?

The handbrake light doesn't work because there is nothing plugged into the back of it!😂 Not sure if a previous owner has used them cables for something else and just cut off the connector, did have a look behind the dash but couldn't find any spare connector but did find a cable leading from the engine bay area to the fuse box. I believe it should be a black cable and a white/green cable?
