Lights and dash cluster issues

Post

I've a few various faults and issues I'm working my way through but need some help if possible!

1. When braking the sidelights come on for both headlamps.

2. Brake lights work but when the lights are on as well it's hard to distinguish when you're braking as it doesn't really brighten.

3. Indicator light on clocks stays lit dimly. Indicators and hazards work fine with no issues, new relay fitted this week.

4. Oil light flickers on when driving permanently despite oil level being ok.

5. The instrument cluster is only half lit, guessing it's as simple as a bulb but the digital clock has no backlight, how can I resolve that?

And finally 6. Speedo has suddenly stopped working after I serviced the carb?

My golf's an '83 1.3 if that makes any difference.
Any help would be great guys I'm so close to not having to but new parts weekly!!

1. check wiring to the rear clusters, in particular make sure earth points clean. Also make sure you have the correct dual filament stop/tail bulbs fitted

2. as per 1

3. check the brown dash earth wire from the clocks check for damage and make sure the pin is straight and clean. look at the pcb on the clock plug too for wear. May be the indicator stalk or hazard light switch is about to pack in too

4. as per 3 for dash earth, also look at the wiring to the pressure switch(es) on the rear of the head. make sure the wires are all clean and no oil leaks

5. yeah will be a blown bulb most liekly, or possibly damage to pcb foil. id recommend replacing all 3 bulbs not uncommon for one or both of the others to blow soon after if you only do the 1

6. check the speedo cable, it runs from the box to the clocks. may have been knocked or its just decided to pack in. if its a later cluster it clips to the back, tyour fiddling may have dislodged. check this when looking at points 3-5

Thanks for your reply rubjonny.

The rear earth point should be fine as I cleaned this up last month and have it a coat of anti rust paint ect but I will going over it with some sand paper to make sure.
What bulbs are meant to be used, I can only seem to find the single filament type suggested to be used (same ones in reverse, fogs ect).

I will have to check the rest when I get home and update you later on my findings

you have got the larger rear light right just to check? if so yeah you should have dual filament stop/tail this is probably the cause of the brake/side light issues :)

Right update time!

1 and 2 were down to wrong bulbs. So that's sorted! :)

3 is ongoing still, PCB, earths and Stalk is fine as well as the relay as I've replaced them two. I have a pattern switch I can try out when I remember.

4. Only the one switch in the back of the head and contacts are clean, I've ordered a new one to replace it and see if that should sort it - although euro car parts and vw heritage have different pressures for the same switch? One was .25 Bar and the other 1.8 I think.

5. Dash lights all replaced and looking lovely and bright now

6. Well it works but it's intermittent, some times it'll kick in when I'm driving other it won't. Earlier it worked all the way this morning to work but on the way back it didn't until halfway when it jumped up suddenly to 50mph.

check the part number/pressure rating on the old one that'll tell you which one you need. ignore the colours for pattern switches as they can be any old random colour only go by that for VW ones blue/brown for 0.24/0.3bar and white for 1.8bar

for the speedo sounds liek the speedo itself or perhaps the gearbox end isnt quite seated properly. the cable will either work or it wont, but again maybe its not quite seated right. on mine i foudn the square peg on the clocks end wasnt fully pressed in so check that at both ends
