Instrument cluster possible snag

Intermittent loss of temp / fuel content

I took the cluster out the other day to fix a non mileage registering issue (red cog had slipped).

I had noticed on the PCB that sits across the top of the cluster (and wraps around the side), to have a loose 'flap' that looks like it should be fitted to something, such as a plug insert. My initial thoughts was to consider this as a pre mod for MFA function or something like that? (Maybe the circuit boards are all the same)?

Either way, there is nothing there for it to connect to. It just sits there with no function (on the side where the odo is / not the rev).

Intermittently, the fuel level will drop off as will the temp when running the car. To get them back on - a fist to the top of the dash sorts it!

Any suggestion as to whether this loose bit if PCB could be shorting it to earth? It does seem to be rather close to the input for the drive for the speedo which is metal. I am going to insulate the connections off on that note, has anyone seem this fault?

Are there any wiring diagrams for the cluster available? I have searched but no luck.

Everything else visually, seems ok. Resistors all in tact etc and have cleaned up the main plug into the cluster with emery.

Cheers all

Andy

yes this is for the speed sensor foron the back of the MFA clocks, its also used on cars with cruise control.

i had similar issue to yours (only temp gauge) turns out the plug on the bottom of the clocks was a bit loose plus the plastic surround was missing so it coudl be a bit hit n miss. check all the contact pads are good and that the pins inside the socket are all nice and straight plus not squashed flat.

Cheers John,

I will get those points checked out this weekend, from what I saw the contacts were ok so it might lie within the actual loom / plug end maybe?! Not a major worry, fist to the dash generally tells her to behave!

yeah the pins often squash down and you just need to tweak em with a pick or just open the flap on the back then pull pins 1 at a time and tweak as required. just be careful of the red one as its permanent live ;)
