Ignition problems?

Post

Unsure if this topic goes in here or not. :$ Anyway ive tried alot to set the ignition timing on my golf and have looked on many pictures on this forum on the flywheel marks thats used for setting the ignition timing. Many say there should be a ''punch mark'' on the flywheel that i should use and there should be a diamond mark. My flywheel looks a bit strange since i have the punch mark in the diamond mark? anyone have the similar? i also have the ''timing lugs'' on the sides, wich marks should i use for setting the ignition? when i set the ignition to one of the timing lugs it goes alot higer on the RPM's atleast. The car shakes like a washing machine to drive for the moment, only runs good during acceleration. :(

What fuel are you using, best to use super unleaded but you can adjust the timing to run on normal unleaded but I found my car flat and had a lumpy tick over on normal unleaded so now run super unleaded.
Depening on which fuel you want to use will affect the timing.

I use 95 octane unleaded fuel but have always mixed in some lead replacement. Ive now tried to retard the ignition a little bit but it still runs shaky, but only on steady gas. Got to think about when you mentioned the fuel. I replaced the fuel filter a couple of days ago but can a filter really make that great differance?  :ocf_emoticons__dontknow:

Update: Fuel filter changed still the same shaky stuttering. Ignition has been set with a strobe so can't be the ignition anymore. Out of clues.  :depressed:

Update Nr2: tested to set the ignition far wrong than it should be and know it runs good without any stuttering :ocf_emoticons__icon_eek: could it be the timingbelt that sits wrong?  :(

You don't need to put in a lead replacement, all VW water cooled engines from 1974 will run on unleaded.
The GTi it's meant to run on 98 RON octane rated petrol (There should be a sticker on the car saying this) all other engines, 1.1, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6 carb will run on 95 RON normal unleaded petrol.
The GTi will run on normanl unleaded but the power will be down and tick over may be a little lumpy and you may find the MPG is lower.

It is really easy for the cam belt to be a tooth out and the car will sort of run, I would check those marks.
