Correct horns for a series 1 GTI

Post

which ones?

So does a series 1 GTI usually have a twin horn setup?  Mine has single wiring that is split near the horn end for two horns, looks original.  Question is what type of horns would have originally been on the car, the snail type or disc type?  Was Bosch the original supplier?

Snail type

Disc type

Like some others I'm having trouble getting two working.  I thought it was down to old/deteriorated wiring but the muiltimeter says otherwise.

Does the disc type draw fewer amps than the snail type, I was wondering if I'd have better luck trying two disc type horns?

snail type im pretty sure, the flat type I've only ever seen on poverty spec, and they only have the 1 horn.

If you have 2 horns you need a relay which switches the earth side of the horns, this is clipped above the fusebox on an S1 GTI and is wired direct to the horn button brown/blue wire. the output side goes to E/11, then horn earth to A/7. the input sde is earthed above the fusebox

the steering rack earth is a good one for failing, this is the earth for the horn button, though if the relay clicks when button pressed it isnt down to that

Thanks.  I have the relay and it clicks, horn usually works but it's a bit intermittent.  Have checked the wiring and it seems OK.  I'll have to go over it again, I must have missed something.

the horns themselves can be to blame sometimes, get full of crud and require more current to work. i saw someone filled his up with penetrating oil and swished about/sounded the horn to free up then drained and put some silicone spray lube in to lube up again

Hi there, i too have an issue with my horns, on a 85 gti cabrio ive checked everything but im stuck when it comes to the cabling inside the fuse box. Ive had the steering wheel off and ive checked the steering rack for earth and it doesn't have continuity surprise surprise, but i put a clean earth down the cable thats supposed to enable the relay but no click. ive had the relay out and checked it and it works perfectly fine ive put a direct supply to the horns and they work fine im stuck now i dont know what to do any help would be great.

Pretty sure there an FAQ below on horns.
Don't forget the brass ring and spring clip under the steering wheel rubs away so possibly why it's intermittent. Try the horn with the wheel in different positions, see if that helps. It did for mine so I've left the wheel at a slightly off set angle.

there are 2 fuses for the horns on the later blade fusebox, you have the main horn fuse #16 and another for the horn relay #18. if earthing the brown/blue wire on the stalk plug doesnt make the horn relay click then trace this wire for bodgery.

also the earth for the steering rack is in the engine bay, look on the steering rack itself there should be a short earht wire from a screw on the rack to the chassis :)

I've got twin disc horns fitted to a bar then attached to the car on my 1978 Mk1 Scirocco and they are fitted as standard, each horn makes a different sound, one low and one a higher note.
I see you have a picture in the thread can you still buy them new?

That is good to know, I suspected that might be the case.  I think you can still buy them - I googled for those pics.
