Hi, mate. The blue wire is the field. You don't need, any wires for it to work/charge correctly.

Wat do u mean the blue wire is the field? I thought that the blue wire sends a signal to summat to tell the alternator to charge?

On the field wire you "switch on" the alt to charge. everytime when you turn the ignition key to run position. It's an ignition + which comes thru a diode.  So if you connect the charge cable (B+) and give an ign + to the blue wire or D+ point the ALT must work if it good.  Which alt you use?

the blue wire from the mk1 loom does run to 1 pin on the 2 pin plug, the other pin is not used :)

if you look closely at the alternator it may be labelled, the blue wire wants to go to D+
