Can't find anything

Hi all,

I can't find anything in my dash that will actually hold the stereo in.

The stereo will go in a housing but there looks like theres nothing in the dash to hold the housing in

What is meant to hold the stereo in?

Many thanks
Scorp

Hi again Scorp!

There is nothing there from VW apart from a blanking plate most of the time back then.
The whole is a standard size to fit most normal looking units.
You just need to buy a 'Cage' that fits yours and put that in first following the instructions that come with it!

They are normally metal grey or black and cheaper than chips.

Did you just buy this car out of interest?  :)

BEFORE I FORGET!!!!!
Fit the stereo and speakers, making sure all is perfect before fitting a new ASH TRAY!!!

Thanks golfcabrio!

There is just a hole there yes, all of the wiring is also there.

It just looks like there is nothing to hold the cage into the dash apart from resting on the heater adjustment bit!

Yes, ive just bought a 1988 cabrio! :D

If you Google a picture of a stereo cage you will see that there are slots (pins) cut in it all the way round.
All you have to do is once its in place is bend the pins outwards towards to dash on all four sides and it will stay there!!

There should be a metal bracket, pop-riveted to the inside rear face of the dash with an oblong hole pressed into it.

On the rear of stereos of the time there will be a correspondingly placed threaded bolt onto which is pushed a rubber bung.

In combination they support the rear of the stereo and stop any sagging.

To save me taking mine out to photograph the images below were filched from the inter-web to give you an idea…
