Don't take it off just to clean it, clean it on the car and save your self a lot of work.
What is the roof skin made off?
If you need a new roof skin then fine remove the frame if you want to?
If the roof skin is vinyl and more than a few years old I would not attempt to remove it as you may tear/damage it when removing it as vinyl get brittle with age.
There was a guide on this site about replacing the roof skin you may get an idea of how to then remove the frame.

You could try and loosen the rear tension cable and remove the 2 side plastic covers and lift the roof up at the back and sides near to body panels, you may break the tension cable when you come to re tighten it but they can be bought and replaced easily enough, it's just if you damage the roof pulling it about is more of the problem?
Chorle or other people on here may have a better idea as I've only ever played with vinyl roofs as that's what's fitted to my car.
If you post up a picture of the roof I could tell you which type you have.
