i was planing on stripping the floor and inner wings, possibly engine bay, and also the dreaded factory sunroof tray and treating them with the 3 stage rust provention, a friend is going to restore his and im going to do mine and my bro's but  where i want to ensure it stays as rust free as possible for a long as possible, my mate thinks you shouldnt take the factory stuff off. paint and stonechip has changed so much i think it should have the latest protection in the unseen / hard to treat zones.
can u treat the tank with it too?

I think VWs rubbery stone chip paint used on the underside and wheel arches is very good stuff, mines been on the car since it was made in 1988 and is still keeping the rust at bay, my car is used every day all year round and lives outside. The only problem you can get is if the paint is damaged then rust can spread underneath, as long as you check around the car at least once a year and treat/repair any damage it will be fine. I do spray waxoyl on mine every 2 years and check before and after the winter. 20 years of owning the car and it's never been touched by a welder..
VW did get the hang of rust proofing in the late 80s or perhaps Karmann made a better job as my car is a cabriolet?

I've just done my rear beam in this stuff, the 3 stage bit is a little misleading though as one is just a degreeser, the other is a chemical metal prep like cure rust then you paint over with the POR 15. you don't really the machine clean to be honest.

The beauty with POR 15 is you can paint over it as well. You coild paint the critical areas in the stuff then stonechip over for a factory look?

What ever you do though - DONT GET IT ON YOUR HANDS !!!

Evil stuff but it does last brilliantly

I have used various Bilt Hamber products and have no complaints - the Deox rust removers do the job, and the car shampoo only needs one teaspoon in a bucket of water! The epoxy mastic gave a lovely finish on axle beams, etc.
