Gti wing mirror refurb

Im looking for abit of advice on how to tidy my wing mirrors up. Firstly does the base come away from the mirror so you can paint them up? And also what would the best paint be to use on the base? Cheers.

I refurbed mine without taking apart base section, rubbed down with wet & dry paper, grey undercoat then a few coats of satin black plasticote.  Plastic I dressed with C4 Gtechniq.

Yep, just taped the other areas up.  Using this 3m blue tape.
