What was the factory fitment?
Guys, changing loom on mk1 gti and can't seem to locate wires for the temp gauge. It's not clear if it ever worked. Anyone know what was factory fitted and what was possibly fitted by the owner? This is what I'm looking at:-
Thanks
Thanks

Hi Craig
Factory fit was oil temp only and this was generally centrally located. The oil pressure is an add on.

Thanks, that what the thought was. We will decide to wire in or remove.

Hi, I preferred to fill all three positions with VDO Battery Voltage, Oil Pressure and Temperature Gauges on my 1.5 GL. All options available at the time.
They give me confidence. I had to change my alternator control unit / brush holder in the past when I had battery problems.
The oil pressure and temperature particularly useful for a high performance engine. These gauge are out of a Corrado with the straight line indications. I changed them for the more rounded indications. Still VDO like you have.

Very neat. I've got to admit, I'm a bit of a sucker for these. I've had these retrofitted in almost all my mk1/2 cars. Done it recently using Audi gauges with a green led that washes out the orange tinge.

There were no factory fitted dials. All added by the dealer or by the new owner. Yours are period correct in that they have no image in the lower half and pointed dials

My 1983 Golf 1.5 was fitted with a blank when I originally purchased it. I have retro fitted my additional gauges.
This is the set I have fitted to replace the Corrado set which hopefully satisfies the period scrutiny.
This is also very interesting about the fitting of dials in the centre console.
My first Mk1 was a Series 1 1977 Golf GLS, a photo of which is my Avatar above. This had a smaller centre console with two holes populated by a Quartz clock and a blank as standard.
it does seem that the first Series 1 GTI without the MFI might have had both positions filled. Of course this might be a customer request as I cant find a brochure to prove it.

My first Cabriolet had all Three as usual the car was a 5spd manual and the oil temp never bothered me,
However on the Next 2 I bought were both automatics, and the oil temp on the highway @ 75mph with the a/c on in the summer the oil temp would go to 145 or hotter.
I installed an external oil cooler off a Volvo. and my oil temp would never go above 110. This is at about 80mph on the interstate running with ac on or off. The value of knowing the oil temp is Marvy..
