Cabrio roof down position locking knobs, how to remove....

Post

... without breaking them.

Should have taken a photo, but knew where they are meant to go, so didn't ( yet ).

Anyways, replacing the '86 Mk1's roof, frame and all, almost got it off, but the two plastic knobs that you need to press down to raise the roof ( either side of the back seat ) aren't coming off, do I need to use even more violence or is there a technique or an invisible screw somewhere ?

Thanks in advance.

I think the knob thumb push bits just push on, not sure on the metal levers themselves as my cabby was a late one so didn't have them

Well 'Chortle' is the expert but I thought they just pulled off.
See if you can get a drop of WD40 around the back of them and leave it for 24 hours and then see.

You can do that while you wait for our resident roof expert to get back to you!

Yes they prize off.
There are little olips ithat fit into the slot inside the knob.
Iiirc they go over the metal mins first then the knobs push on. I doubt it names much difference if the clips are already in the knob slots.

Unless the frame is rusted out it damaged bent etc then there's no need to swap frames.
Remember also there are three different frames so early frames won't fit and post 1990 Fred tend to be electric which is no good to you.
Folks often swap frames over perhaps because a frame looks like to have a better roof but generally unless the roof is new (&you have a receipt proving  it is) then your only putting old on old! Which will need replacing at some point anyway
New roof will last years and needs be treated with proper cleaners and proofers.

Cheers
Chortke

Uh oh, and thanks.

Luckily I've got all winter ( don't get me started on road tax laws in the Netherlands ).

State of play, rescued the roof and frame of a very good looking Mk1 in a scrapyard, went for the complete transfer as upholstery type stuff ( Bodywork, Fittings and Interior ) is definately not my forte. Will find out in a day or two if I have taken the right path, the roof's almost off, first got to repair the only piece of rust on the car.
