Timing up a 2.0 9a in bits...

Post

Hey guys,
ive got a 2.0 9a engine in my golf. The head killed itself about a year ago by breaching the wall between 2 cylinders. Was going to rebuild it but its ruined.

I got an early kr head that im putting on. The first thing I need to do is time it all up. Being that I took it all apart over a year ago I really cant remember the positions everything came off in… oops.

My question is - with the head and bottom end apart at the moment, is there an easy way to set each individually in the right position? Once done bolt them together and install the belt and then make any minor tweaks.

ive never timed up an engine before so would appreciate any info on if this is possible with them apart and how to do it.

cheers!

Take rocker cover off head, line the two dots up on the cam sprockets so they face each other then that's in TDC position

The block, turn the crank until cylinder 1 is at the top and you should be near or about there

Stick head on, tighten up to spec, and the put the belt on with a new tensioner

So the belt so you put it around the crank pulley first, go around the intermediate pulley just above crank, can be anywhere this
Pulley, then holding as tight as possible, around the cam pulley (a little notch on the pulley will line up with a mark on can cover)
