weak idle/ incorrect dizzy cap

Hi

To cut a long story short….. I had a conversion done by a top rate cowboy. He has bodged the job so badly I'm now left without an idle control valve amongst other things. The dizzy cap is incorrect because the brake fluid reservoir is the original one from the mk1 and is taking up too much room. My question is can you run one of these engines without an icv? Can I change the break fluid reservoir what about an ignition amplifier???………….. basically any feed back would be appreciated.

many thanks

If its a kr (mk2 16v engine) then it should have an ignition amplifier. And 'incorrect' dizzy cap, does it sit 90* to the head rather than straight out, if so its an abf cap and is fine, just very tight with a kr cap on.

It also should have an isv, its an inline one to the side of the head.

If its a kr of course

if it is a kr running an abf cap what i do is rotate dizzy 180 degrees so cap points forward, gives much more room. you may need longer king lead, either an 8v one or get another set of kr/abf bosch/beru leads and pop the spark end off one of the spark plug leads and swap a cap end over from one of the others (bosch/beru leads have removable ends)

as for isv it can run without but it means you cold start and warm up idle wont be great, and without the over-run cutoff valve you may have to raise the base idle to stop it stalling on over-run.

apparently the mk1 AAV valve can work ok as a reimplement for the isv but if it was my car i would be sourcing an isv control unit and the wirign loom from engien bay to get it all working as VW designed it
