id personally stick to the kjet pump as its good for 280bhp ish and no you dont need the accumalator but it does come in handy as it acts like a mini swirl pot
or you could just use a lift pump and go for a bosch 044 pump

Using a Bosch 044. GTi one is ok unless you want to run KO4 with more power or a hybrid and need bigger injectors

well after buying a second hand set up, cradle and the lot , the money ill spend on it i may aswell buy a 044 as suggested and do away with the accumulator
are you running a swirl pot smudge ?

if its a proper mk1 gti tank it has a proper built in swirl pot, it should look like this:
http://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=how-to_2%2Ffuel-tank-cleaning_3
if its a diesel one it just has a tin pot spot welded in which is an inferior design and isnt good enough for a petrol car. so i would say get a lifter pump and external swirl pot, and if possible send the tank back as it isnt a gti tank as advertised! the lifter pump will fit a carb tank just fine
the accumulator isnt required its there on the kjet system to smooth out fuel flow to the metering head, this job is done by the fuel rail on an EFI car

have you still got your old fuel tank and is it in good order? if so I would try to send that tank back if possible as its technically not as describe sine it isnt really a GI tank.
Then I would go for the later cab/rocco/g40 shape polo lifter pump and swirl pot route as I've seen a fair few people suffer from fuel starvation with the diesel tank
