16vg60; Advice on last few things

I learnt this the hard way :(. Had a gti tank restored but the company took the lid off the swirl pot so the fuel filter wouldnt work. Then tried to fit a lift pump but it wouldn't fit.

You need a carb tank for the lift pump and you want a cabriolet lift pump for simplicity as the outlets are facing towards the front of the car and the connector is in the right place. If you get a polo version the outlets face towards the rear and the connector plug can be a pain.

Fuel lines fit easily at the back of the tank where the the rear seat bench drops down.

Mark aka funk-star at classic vw stocks the fuel reservoir (swirl pot).

I mounted the main pump in stock tray and the original fuel accumulator bracket can be modified (the holding bracket is round and the swirl pot is square, it just needs reshaping and something rubber to protect the sides - the original mounting points are as stock) to hold the swirl pot.

You just have to fabricate something to keep your fuel lines away from the axle as you will have 4 lines running from there.

Is you want any help just ask as I have done it recently on my G60.

Cheers

Rich

Hi mate, thanks for your reply.
Thinking back to when my car was on the road I remember it hesitated slightly when cornering hard so I think there is an issue there which needs to be addressed and I want to ensure the engine doesn't get starved of fuel at any point.
I don't suppose you took any pictures of your build at all did you? I take it you had the standard rubber hose feeding the main pump from the tank, then pump to swirl pot, swirl pot to engine and engine return back to swirl pot and a return from your swirl pot back to the tank?
Be great if you had any pictures of how all this is plumbed together, thanks.

Hi Dani,

I do have some pictures, I was planning to do a guide.

Give me a week and I should have something.

Superb would appreciate you posting them up, I'm imagining space is going to be tight. Where did you mount your fuel filter? What engine are you using?

G60 8v :)My build : http://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=projects%2Fyour-mk1-golfs_2%2Fthe-yellow-peril-g60&kfs79=60

I put the Corrado G60 fuel filter in the scuttle panel where the original one was as there are holes in the scuttle to accommodate the pipe work and also managed to fit my hydraulic clutch reservoir :)

Thanks. Any idea how the lift pump gets wired up?

Does anyone know if the citi golf gti tanks were the same or similar to a standard gti tank with internal swirl pot?

That is a normal fuel injected Citi Golf tank. The FI tanks all have an internal swirl pot built in around the outlet.

So it has an internal swirl pot like a standard GTI tank? Also what's that gubbins and pipework externally?  I'm just wondering if I could use that set up on my car if it's available to fuel my 16vg60 conversion.

I'll start with the numbered ports - #1 is the overflow, it is connected to that little bell shaped piece on the left that sits under the back of the tank (the pipe in the pic is cut). #2 is the return from the fuel pressure regulator. Big pipe in the bottom center is the outlet and connects to the fuel pump as in the pic, pipe above that is the breather, connects to the filler neck. Big pipe peeking out on the left is the filler pipe, same as all the Mk1 tanks. The thin pipe going to the top of the tank from the pump is a 'self bleeding' thingy that get rid of air in the system. I'm using this tank in all three my modded Mk1's and I have no issues with fuel starvation. I pulled out the little mesh filter in my GT's tank a couple of weeks back and as far as I can tell the tank looks the same inside as the GTi tank.

Ok great. So that unit that is at the outlet from the tank is a fuel pressure regulator then?. If so is it at a fixed pressure?
Where would I get a tank like that from? Thanks.

It can't be, you need the FPR on the end of your fuel rail.

I'm just wondering what that unit is as it's not the fuel pump I wouldn't have thought?

Also in tokens above post he mentioned pipe #2 is the return from the fuel pressure regulator?

That is the MP9 fuel pump in the picture, it comes with three in/outlets, the rest of the system is conventional. The fuel pressure regulator clips into the fuel rail and the filter sits in the engine bay. Two 8mm metal pipes runs under the car to the engine bay, the rest are connected using rubber pipes. We normally ditch the MP9 pump (it is very expensive) and use a normal Caravelle/044 type pump. The thin bleeder pipe going to the top of the tank gets blocked off then.

That makes sense, so are these tanks available new?
