02M driveshaft length problem

Post

Has anyone got an 02m gearbox in a Mk1 Caddy or Golf . I have bought some drive shafts from Epytec and the N/S one appears to be about 15mm to short . Measuring from the gearbox flange to the hub flange the shaft I have is 380mm to 415mm . Does anyone have any measurements for what they should be ? Thanks

Is that the absolute total length includiing the bit that sits in the gearbox flange ?

Have you actually tried it in the car?

Several times to make sure . When it is bolted on to the gearbox flange and extended to its maximum only about half the thread is visible . I do not want to use the half shaft as the limiting factor for droop.

Sorry im not familiar with 02m box, are the shafts 02m into mk1 specific?or for 02a/02j in general?

Yes , they are 02m specific

What engine is fitted to the box?
Could be the shafts are the correct length for an 02m on a specific engine
I'm facing a similar issue using an 02m on a 2.0l TFSI and no one seems to be able to confirm if the 'conversion' shafts will be the correct length

I am using the APY 1.8t engine so I would imagine you would have the same problem if the shafts I was supplied are what they think are correct  . I suspect they supplied me a short shaft from another application but I was not able to find out what length the shaft should have been , I used their gearbox mounts so there cannot be much argument .
I have gone back to my home made shafts and Epytec have been apolagetic and gracious  about me returning their shafts .
A spacer machined to go into the gearbox flange would have got round the problem but for the price you have to pay they need to be right.

Probably a really stupid question but did the other Epytec driveshaft fit OK (assuming that you bought a pair)?  I was simply wondering whether it was an engine / gearbox fitting / alignment issue as there is a bit of play depending upon how you mount everything…

The long shaft was fine and the mounts were also epytec with  very little skope for variation apart from orientating the bushes which I might consider in the future to give some clearance for the belt tensioner
